American Airlines Raises Bag Fees Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Travelers bracing for their next getaway on American Airlines will soon notice a heavier hit to their wallets at the check-in counter. The carrier confirmed it is raising fees for checked bags on domestic and short-haul international flights, a move spurred by the relentless climb in global jet fuel prices. It’s the kind of news that makes us all sigh, but for the aviation industry, it represents a difficult attempt to protect margins as operational costs skyrocket.

Fuel prices have been on an aggressive upward trajectory lately. According to data from Misryoum, the cost of jet fuel has jumped from an average of $85 to $90 per barrel back in February to roughly $209 per barrel globally. This volatility is largely tied to tensions in the Middle East, particularly disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, which is a critical artery for roughly twenty percent of the world’s oil supply.

Starting this Thursday, passengers can expect to pay $10 more for both their first and second checked bags. For those traveling with a third suitcase, the fee is climbing to $200, a $50 increase that brings some domestic routes in line with pricing structures already seen in places like Canada. It feels like a steady erosion of the perks we used to take for granted when booking a standard ticket.

Changes are also coming for basic economy fliers on May 18. This group will see an additional $5 bump on bag fees and will no longer have the option to pick their seats without paying extra or qualify for complimentary system-wide upgrades.

At least for now, those booking into premium cabins remain insulated from these specific changes, as they will continue to enjoy complimentary baggage allowances. As the industry grapples with these expensive fuel realities, it seems that economy travel is becoming a little more transactional and, frankly, a bit more expensive for the average family trying to get home or reach a vacation spot. It’s a reminder to double-check your booking class before hitting that purchase button.
