When Olivia Jean filed for divorce on June 3 in Nashville, she didn’t just say the marriage was over. In court documents. the singer pointed to a specific reason: “inappropriate marital conduct. ” adding that she believes she can show Jack White is “guilty of inappropriate marital conduct. which makes further cohabitation unsafe and improper.”.
Jean, 36, is seeking to end the relationship after more than three years of marriage. Her filing cites “irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct,” and she listed their date of separation as the date of filing.
Under Tennessee law. the complaint references a standard tied to the other spouse’s treatment of the partner—when one spouse exhibits “cruel and inhuman treatment or conduct towards” the other. Jean’s request is framed around that threshold. not just a breakdown between two people who once looked certain about their future.
Alongside the request for the divorce itself, Jean says she depends on White’s income for support. She is asking for alimony. She is also asking to remain the beneficiary of White’s life insurance and to have White continue paying her health insurance coverage.
Jean says she “hopes” to enter into a written Marital Dissolution Agreement covering the division of their assets, with the plan subject to court approval. She also requests that White pay her legal costs and fees connected to the proceedings.
The marriage story began with a spectacle. Jean and White married in December 2022 during a concert in White’s hometown of Detroit. The surprise unfolded late in the show when White ushered Jean onstage and they began singing his band’s song “Hotel Yorba.” Toward the end of that song. the music cut out and White got down on one knee to propose.
“I’ve got a question for you,” White told Jean. “Will you marry me?” Jean accepted, and the pair walked off.
Minutes later, they returned to the stage for a live wedding ceremony officiated by Third Man Records’ Ben Swank, turning the proposal into something that played out in front of a crowd.
For White, it was his third marriage. He had previously been married to Meg White from 1996 to 2000 and to Karen Elson from 2005 to 2013.
The filings lay out a stark shift from that public. celebratory beginning to a private separation framed around safety and dependence. Jean’s complaint ties the end of cohabitation to what she calls unsafe conduct. while still asking White to keep providing financial support through alimony and continued insurance benefits.
As of now, the court process will determine whether the allegations Jean raised in Nashville can be sustained and how the divorce—and the requested life-insurance and health-insurance terms—ultimately plays out.
