Okamoto launches 500-level HR as Blue Jays strike early

Okamoto 500-level – Kazuma Okamoto became the 10th Blue Jays player in franchise history to hit a home run into the 500 level at the Rogers Centre, powering Toronto to an early 3–0 lead over the New York Yankees in Friday’s first game of a three-game set.

When Kazuma Okamoto swung at a slider from New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Weathers, it didn’t just leave the yard—it kept going until it found the fifth deck at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jays infielder launched the pitch, an 87-mile-per-hour slider, to left field on Friday. It landed in the fifth deck at a measured distance of 423 feet, a kind of shot that instantly changes the mood of a ballpark—especially when it comes early.

The blast gave Toronto an immediate 3–0 lead over the Yankees in the first game of their three-game set.

For Okamoto, the moment carried franchise weight. He became the 10th player in Blue Jays history to reach the 500 level with a home run at the Rogers Centre. That list includes Joe Carter. Carlos Delgado. Jose Canseco. Shawn Green. Raul Mondesi. Josh Phelps. Vernon Wells. Edwin Encarnacion. and Josh Donaldson.

It also fit into a broader MLB milestone. Okamoto became the 19th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 500-level with a home run since the building opened in 1989.

Before Friday’s game, Okamoto’s season profile reflected a steady mix of production and room to grow: he was slashing .230/.309/.422, with 13 home runs and 38 RBI in his first season in the majors.

The Blue Jays were already chasing position in the American League East when Friday began. Toronto entered the action in third place with a 33–36 record, sitting nine games back of the Tampa Bay Rays and Yankees for the top spot.

A homer that reaches the 500 level doesn’t happen often, and on a night when Toronto was trying to move within reach of the division leaders, it offered a blunt message: the game could tilt quickly—if the swing comes on time.
