Odell Beckham returns, never wanted Giants exit

Odell Beckham Jr. says he never wanted to leave the New York Giants, calling his return this week “a pretty surreal feeling.” Beckham, who spent his first five NFL seasons with the Giants before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in the 2019 offseason, is ba

Odell Beckham walked back into the building where his NFL story began, but what hit him first wasn’t the jerseys or the nostalgia. It was the feeling that he had been unsettled ever since he “had to walk away” from the Giants.

Beckham spent his first five seasons with the Giants, insisting he never wanted to leave. In the 2019 offseason. the Giants sent him to the Browns in a blockbuster trade—one he now frames as something that never truly sat right with him. Eight years and three other teams later. Beckham has returned to where it all started. signing a free agent deal this week with the Giants. using a first-round pick on him when he came into the league.

“Just the way that I had to walk away, it was just unsettling in my soul, in my spirit,” Beckham said via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. “It’s not who I am. I’ve never surrendered or quit or felt like I’ve given up on myself or anything. It just wasn’t sitting with me well.”

His gratitude was just as direct. Beckham thanked co-owner John Mara and the organization for another opportunity, describing the moment as more than a football decision. “This family brought me in; they gave me my first opportunity,” Beckham said. “Something I’ll forever be grateful for. So many amazing memories. My life was here. I never thought I’d be anywhere else. To even have the opportunity to put a jersey and a helmet back on – I actually left one of my helmets here. it had dust on it. — it was good to see.”.

He tied the return to the people and the place—“for that family. for this building. for Giants Nation”—and made it clear he isn’t arriving with a polished script. “But yeah, I want to do it for that family, for this building, for Giants Nation. This is my squad. It’s just going to come with everyday work, being the best me I can be.”.

The timing matters. Beckham has not played an NFL game since Dec. 8, 2024, when he played against the Dolphins. He sat out the 2025 season, and over the past four seasons he has appeared in only 23 games. Even with that gap, Beckham is approaching the comeback like a door he didn’t expect to open again.

At 33, he hasn’t made a Pro Bowl since 2016, and he hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since 2019. Still, he framed this return as an opportunity from a higher power rather than a countdown.

“I look at it like this: God has given me one more opportunity to play,” Beckham said. “Whatever I do with that is that. I’m not saying this is my only year and I’m not saying that I’ve got five more for you. I’m just looking at it like this is my opportunity now. We’ll see where it goes from there.”.

  1. Honestly kinda sad? Like the way he says it was unsettling “in my soul” made me roll my eyes a bit but I get it. Also John Mara still running that vibe like it’s 2012 lol.

  2. Wait, doesn’t this mean the Giants messed up the trade and now he’s coming back to punish them? I saw somewhere they never should’ve let him go, so this feels like karma. But at the same time it’s football, they do it for cap reasons, so idk.

  3. A pretty surreal feeling?? Bro he’s been on like 3 teams and still acting like he got abducted by the Browns. I’m sure it’s emotional and all, but the Giants traded him, so why would “his life was here” change now that he’s free again. Also he thanks John Mara like he’s a family member like… okay.
