Abreu powers Red Sox as Tolle shuts down Orioles

Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Payton Tolle pitched six scoreless innings, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-1 on Wednesday.
BOSTON — By the time the Boston Red Sox sent Wilyer Abreu to the plate in the third inning, the game already felt like it was slipping away from the Baltimore Orioles.
Abreu struck for a two-run home run and drove in three runs overall, while Payton Tolle held the Orioles scoreless through six innings as Boston cruised to an 8-1 victory on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
The Red Sox struck early. Jarren Duran led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Abreu then drove Duran in to make it 1-0. In the third inning, Abreu added another two-run homer, turning the score into 3-0.
Boston’s offense didn’t stall. It surged. In the fifth inning, the Red Sox erupted for five runs, beginning with Mickey Gasper’s two-run triple. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Caleb Durbin, and Ceddanne Rafaela each drove in a run in the frame. Gasper finished with that big two-run hit. and Rafaela added three hits for a Boston lineup that didn’t miss—every spot in the batting order had at least one hit.
This was also a bounce-back moment for a team that had recently endured a rough stretch: Boston had gone 11 straight games without scoring more than four runs. The Red Sox have since scored five or more runs in six of their last nine games.
Tolle kept that momentum from narrowing. He improved to 3-2 after allowing seven hits, striking out five, and walking two while lowering his ERA to 2.28. He has allowed less than four runs in nine of his 10 career starts.
Baltimore did get on the board in the seventh. Adley Rutschman delivered an RBI triple, cutting into the margin. But Boston’s lead was already built solidly, and the Orioles couldn’t turn that moment into a comeback.
Chris Bassitt (4-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and three runs in three innings. Taylor Ward added three singles for Baltimore. On the final stretch, Ryan Watson earned his first career save, pitching three innings with two strikeouts and allowing one run.
The teams will meet again for the rubber match. Trevor Rogers (2-6, 6.84) is scheduled to pitch for the Orioles, while the Red Sox have not announced their starter.
