The Little League World Series got underway Wednesday, and already there is controversy surrounding the tournament. Team Nicaragua will be without two of its players after they were unable to obtain the required documentation to travel to the United States for the tournament.

Obviously a devastating blow to a team with championship aspirations, the situation has been dire and it did not take long for the Little League World Series to address the situation on their broadcast, mentioning Nicaragua’s visa issue on the televised broadcast.

Official Statement from Little League World Series

After the players’ absences were confirmed on television, the Little League World Series told USA TODAY:

“Due to individual circumstances regarding visa travel documentation, two players on the Nicaragua team (Ministerio Sobre Las Alas Del Aguila Little League) from the Latin America Region were unable to make the trip to Williamsport with their team. Due to timing, these players will not be replaced, and the team will play with the remaining 12 rostered players on the team’s affidavit. Little League International’s World Series events have been classified as a ‘major sporting event,’ which allows countries participating the opportunity to follow the appropriate visa process to travel and represent their community here at our tournaments. We work closely with the U.S. Department of State to support our participants and their travel, and we are pleased that 12 of our players from Nicaragua were able to obtain the appropriate documentation, and understand the disappointment for their two teammates not able to make the trip. No further details are currently available.”

The usual Little League World Series team normally consists of 14 players, all of whom are part of the batting lineup, though not all of them can be in the field at once.

Nicaragua will be forced to play with a smaller lineup and fewer reserves available.

A Venezuelan Little League team recently faced a similar situation after being denied U.S. visas in 2025, preventing them from attending the 2025 Little League Senior World Series, which, unlike the Little League World Series, features players ages 13-16.

When does Nicaragua play?

Nicaragua, representing the Latin America Region, has already played its first game of the tournament. In fact, they participated in the very first game of this year’s event, taking on the Caribbean Region team at 1 p.m. ET.
