New York Times slams Bill Pulte as DNI acting

The New York Times editorial board issued a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump’s appointment of Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, arguing Pulte is unqualified and warns that the role could be used for political retaliation.

The New York Times editorial board didn’t waste time after President Donald Trump named Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence. In a blistering rebuke. the board said Pulte is “blatantly unqualified to oversee the nation’s spies. ” adding that he has “no known background in national security.”.

Pulte is currently the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Trump’s decision also replaces former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who quit as DNI last month.

The editorial board argued that Pulte’s only clear qualification is political loyalty rather than security expertise. “His one evident qualification is his eagerness to advance the president’s political revenge campaign. ” it wrote. pointing to Pulte’s use of his current position to attack the president’s perceived enemies and imitate his “childish style.”.

The board’s concern wasn’t confined to competence. “It is chilling to think about how he might use his power as the director of national intelligence, a job that will give him access to sensitive secrets about Americans and foreigners alike,” the editorial said.

It then went further, warning that the appointment itself could harm key institutions. “His appointment is a threat to the effective functioning of the intelligence community, national security and the rule of law,” the editorial added.

The sequence of claims—lack of national security experience, criticism of motivations, and a warning about access to sensitive secrets—lands with a particular urgency because the role changes who oversees the intelligence apparatus at a moment of transition after Gabbard’s resignation.

  1. I didn’t even know who Tulsi Gabbard was until this, but NYT says he’s “unqualified” like ok… isn’t that most appointments anymore? Feels like retaliation is the real story, not intelligence stuff.

  2. Wait, Pulte is head of the housing agency right? So now the spies are under someone who does mortgages? That sounds like it’s gonna get messy fast. Also “sensitive secrets about Americans” like they didn’t all already have that anyway…

  3. NYT is mad because they think political revenge?? But isn’t intelligence always political? I saw a clip online about “childish style” and now I’m like… is Bill Pulte just gonna Twitter-call out people or what. This rule of law line is kinda rich coming from them, but also yeah, giving access to secrets without experience is sketchy.
