New England weather: Scattered rain and snow showers on tap

Tuesday is shaping up to be one of those “look outside, regret nothing yet” kind of days across New England. An area of low pressure will form across a weak boundary, and that sets the stage for wet roads and scattered pockets of rain, snow, and a wintry mix through most of the morning.

It’s not just Greater Boston. This includes really all of Southern New England, so the commute may feel slower than usual. You might catch wet snowflakes—or even graupel—passing through, but with the ground pretty warm, nothing will stick the way it would in colder setups.

Most places will see light rain to start, and the precipitation generally clears out by the time you’re heading home. Still, there’s a chance for a backside shower or two across Greater Boston and coastal Southern New England into Tuesday evening. So, yeah—hang onto that umbrella. Tuesday morning will also be cold, with the commute in the low to mid-30s, and the best chances for snowflakes are west of Worcester into the Berkshires, though a few could reach the surface across Greater Boston. Actually, if you’re thinking of stepping out early, you’ll probably feel it before you see much—like when the cold air hits, and you hear your boots on damp pavement. That little sound tells you everything.

The wind should be relaxed compared with Monday, so there shouldn’t be much added bite. Misryoum newsroom reporting also points to how the HRRR model is picking up the temperature profile as you move vertically in the atmosphere, and what precipitation type is most likely. Boston may see a few flakes mixed within a wintry mix of graupel and showers, and precipitation should be generally light—though there is the chance for one or two spots to see a brief downburst of rain or snow mixed with some soft, pea-sized or less pockets of graupel.

Highs across New England will generally build into the mid- and upper 40s. A couple of 50-degree readings could happen during the afternoon if the sun breaks out as the system exits the region. A backdoor ocean effect during the afternoon could hold Boston and coastal temperatures to the mid-40s, and while the system should mostly quiet down, a few backside snow or rain showers may continue across coastal New England into the evening.

By the time you’re looking toward late day, the trend is pretty clear: farther west means better odds for afternoon and early evening sunshine. For Greater Boston, expect scattered rain showers with some wintry mix or wet flakes mixing in through most of the day, with highs to the upper 40s in Boston and mid-40s along the North and South Shores.

Central and Western Mass. looks like scattered rain and snow showers with some graupel, highs to the low 40s in the Berkshires and mid to upper 40s east. Southeastern Mass. has scattered showers, highs in the mid and upper 40s; Cape Cod and Islands get scattered showers with highs to the mid 40s and a breeze late. Rhode Island sees scattered showers and some wet morning snowflakes north of Providence, with highs to the upper 40s.

New Hampshire: scattered snow showers, highs to the upper 30s and low 40s. Vermont and Maine: scattered snow showers with highs to the upper 30s in Vermont, low 40s along the Maine coast, and mid-30s interior Maine. Connecticut rounds it out with scattered showers and highs to the mid and upper 40s, though a few spots could reach the low 50s.
