Pittsburgh is turning America’s 250th birthday into a party you can actually show up for—starting this weekend.

On Saturday, June 27, Nelly and Third Eye Blind will headline a sold-out concert at Point State Park as part of America250PA’s free concert series. The event is built around a theme of celebrating educators and innovators, and special guest Frzy is scheduled to join the two headliners.

America250PA’s own event information already showed the venue reaching capacity by early June, setting a fast pace for anyone hoping to attend. The show is scheduled for June 27—one week before Pittsburgh hosts an Independence Day concert series at the same location.

The city’s early birthday celebration is also tied to a longer push to mark both America’s 250th anniversary and Pennsylvania’s role in the country’s foundation. America250PA describes its work as spanning multiple years. beginning with planning that started in 2018 when Pennsylvania’s legislature and governor established the Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. known as America250PA.

In 2021, America250PA became the official state partner of the America 250 national effort.

The weekend’s concert is one of a broader set of free America250PA events across Pennsylvania that kicked off in University Park on May 23. The series is scheduled to wrap up in Pittsburgh after stops in Erie, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre.

Nelly and Third Eye Blind aren’t the only big names already in the lineup. Headliners announced for earlier stops included Cole Swindell. The Fray. The Avett Brothers and Lady A. with special guests such as Gabby Barrett. the West Point Band. First to Eleven. Mike Patton. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. En Vogue and Carson Kressley.

Pittsburgh will also keep the momentum going after June 27. Another free series is set for Saturday, July 4, at the City of Pittsburgh Independence Day Celebration. Performances are planned for Point State Park, Liberty Avenue, the North Shore’s Great Lawn and the Grandview Park Bandstand.

That Independence Day lineup includes Plain White T’s, Kahone Concept, Eternal Boy, Cello Fury, Allegheny Brass Band, Louis Castle, M.E.L.T., Shari Richards & the Lenny Smith Project, Nied’s Hotel Band, Billy Price Band and more.

For residents weighing weekend plans—or simply hoping to catch the next stop—America250PA’s concert schedule is shaping up as a rare stretch where the anniversary isn’t confined to speeches or ceremonies.
