NCAA super regional Sunday kicks off with key series

NCAA super – Sunday, June 7 sets the tone for the NCAA baseball super regionals with four major matchups on ESPN, ESPN2, and the ESPN app. Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama and Oklahoma are all navigating series that can end in two games—or swing into a decisive Game 3.

For one more day, college baseball’s super regional round is all about momentum—and the clock. On Sunday, June 7, teams across four sites play in series that can flip the College World Series bracket into something sudden, or send it to a deciding Game 3.

The financial reality is simple: once the bracket is finalized, schedules, travel plans, and the logistics of Omaha get locked in. For the Bulldogs, Longhorns and Crimson Tide, that trip hasn’t happened in years—if they can get there this weekend.

On the mound and on the standings, Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson said the NCAA regional format needs to be rediscussed in terms of what’s best for student-athletes.

He made that point as College World Series tickets were set to be punched on Sunday, June 7—whether through an if-necessary game or Game 2 of a super regional.

North Carolina is trying to do it the hard way

One super regional already forced an if-necessary game: North Carolina vs. USC. The fifth-seeded Tar Heels are coming off a complete game shutout from Jason DeCaro, and they’re looking to reverse sweep USC on Sunday to return to Omaha for the second time in the last three seasons.

If North Carolina and USC split the remaining outcome in either direction, the winners will join West Virginia and Troy as current members of the eight-team CWS field.

Georgia, Texas and Alabama try to close it out

Elsewhere, No. 3 Georgia, No. 6 Texas and No. 7 Alabama are each trying to end their series in two games while booking their flights to Omaha.

For Georgia, that travel book hasn’t happened since 2008. For Texas, it hasn’t happened since 2022. For Alabama, it hasn’t happened since 1999.

Oklahoma’s path is built on another upset

Unseeded Oklahoma is looking to keep its postseason run moving with yet another upset over No. 15 Kansas in the Lawrence Super Regional after beating No. 2 Georgia Tech twice to escape the Atlanta Regional.

The question in Lawrence is whether Oklahoma can take the series on Sunday with one more win over the Jayhawks—or whether the matchup goes to a pivotal Game 3.

  1. I saw “momentum and the clock” and was like wow that’s dramatic for college baseball. Also Auburn coach talking about student athletes?? They’re getting paid in exposure lol.

  2. North Carolina trying to reverse sweep USC… doesn’t that mean they already lost the first one? Like how can they sweep if they can’t even win both? I’m probably reading it wrong but yeah.

  3. If the bracket gets finalized then travel plans get locked in?? That part sounds messed up, like the “financial reality” is driving sports schedules. Also Georgia/Texas/Alabama stuff—Auburn is mad about regional format but isn’t that the NCAA’s whole thing? Idk, just want them to get to Omaha and stop the talking.
