For Jalen Brunson, Game 1 of the NBA Finals ended with basketball—then with a confrontation over what happened from the stands.

The NBA announced it will investigate the behavior of fans who sat courtside at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio and allegedly directed profanity toward New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson during Game 1, according to a report by Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime and NBATV.

The remarks, the report said, were tied to Brunson “flopping.” Game 1 itself was a bruising opening: Brunson scored 30 points as the Knicks rallied to beat the Spurs 105-95, overcoming early injury scares in a spirited start to the series.

After the final buzzer, Brunson met with official Scott Foster to discuss the fans’ remarks, setting a tone for how seriously the situation is being treated beyond the play on the floor.

The NBA Code of Conduct draws a sharp line around what fans should do in the arena. It states that guests are expected to enjoy the basketball experience “free from and without engaging in disruptive behavior. ” including foul or abusive language and harassment aimed at players or other game participants.

It also warns that consequences for violating the code can be severe. The Code of Conduct says violators could face “ejection without refund. revocation of their season tickets. and/or prevention from attending future games.” It adds that the conduct may also put fans in violation of local ordinances. potentially leading to arrest and prosecution.

The NBA’s decision to investigate comes as the league’s rules make clear that profanity and targeted harassment aren’t treated as an inconvenience—they’re treated as conduct that can shift the boundaries of the event itself. Brunson’s meeting with Scott Foster after the game underscores how quickly alleged behavior from fans can spill into an official response.

As the Knicks prepare for what comes next after a 105-95 Game 1 win led by Brunson’s 30 points, the investigation into what was said and who said it will be the story running in parallel to the series on the court.

  1. If it was about flopping then it’s not even that serious? Like fans talk trash every game. But I guess they want to pretend it’s different in the Finals.

  2. Wait I thought Jalen Brunson said something to the refs? Now it’s the fans and profanity. Scott Foster really be out here arguing with everybody. If you’re courtside you should expect some noise but not targeted like that I guess.

  3. This is why people hate NBA arenas. One guy yells ‘flop’ and suddenly it’s like the police are coming? Arrest and prosecution is wild, like what, for saying a rude word? I didn’t even realize Brunson met Foster after the game… sounds like a PR thing too because everyone was already mad about the officiating.
