FIFA changes 2026 pre-match ceremony for full squads

FIFA says the 2026 World Cup will debut a new pre-match ceremony where the entire matchday squad—rather than only starters—enters through a dedicated arch, lines up around the center circle for national anthems, and faces opponents to create a “moment of unity

A golden moment for fans is arriving in New York City—yet FIFA is already changing how the biggest moment in the game begins.

As the FIFA World Cup trophy came to New York City ahead of the World Cup. Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated global culture across the five boroughs. The visit set the tone for FIFA’s latest move: a new pre-match ceremony format for the 2026 World Cup that will look different from what viewers have become used to.

FIFA says that, in 2026, the entire matchday squad for both teams will be on the field during the ceremony—not just the starting lineups.

Pre-game walkouts will shift away from the familiar setup seen in previous World Cups. when each team’s starting 11 lined up next to one another near midfield. Under FIFA’s new plan. every player on both teams’ matchday squad will enter the pitch through a dedicated arch. accompanied by youth escorts. After the walkouts, players will line up around the center circle for the national anthems.

The staging will also add a visual signature: extra-large country flag banners on either side of the pitch.

FIFA framed the change as an effort to broaden the ceremony beyond the players who start the match. FIFA said the format is meant to let every player—not only starters—experience the “symbolic moment of pride and emotion when representing their country on football’s greatest stage.”

In a statement. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said FIFA is “innovate[ing] the way the game is experienced” as the tournament grows. He added that having all players and referees face each other in the center circle during the national anthems will create a “moment of unity. pride and emotion” that “truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.” He also said the World Cup is “about every player and every fan. ” and that the ceremony reflects that.

The World Cup is scheduled to be held from June 11 through July 19, with the United States, Canada and Mexico serving as co-hosts.

Taken together, FIFA’s trophy arrival in New York and its decision to remake the matchday walkout point to a single message: the spectacle is expanding, and the ceremony is being redesigned so more players—and not just the starting 11—stand at the center of the moment.
