In the Oval Office, political advisor Peter Navarro didn’t hold back as he praised President Donald Trump—twice over, in his own way—before pivoting to a new move meant to hit the flow of illegal goods.

“Sir, you did a miracle when you came in! You shut that border down in a matter of days, to end a flood of millions of illegal aliens,” Navarro said during the press conference. He added, “A secure America is a safe America.”

Navarro’s praise set the tone as the administration promoted a new executive order targeting tariff evasion and illegal imports. The longtime Trump adviser then described how the order will work: it will “empower customs officials to target ‘tariff evaders’ and illegal goods entering the United States.”.

He estimated the measure could save $15 billion in its first year and as much as $100 billion over time. Navarro also made a blunt claim about the stakes of enforcement: “Plus, we’ll stop the fentanyl coming in,” he said.

As Trump prepared to sign the order, Navarro returned to the same message—linking border security to trade. “This is a message to the world today when you sign this: There is nowhere to run. nowhere to hide. ” Navarro said. “This is what Donald Trump does. He secures our borders — not just physically, but in terms of trade.”.

He called the new customs enforcement effort “awesome,” and Trump appeared pleased with the remarks. Trump thanked Navarro twice before beginning his own comments.

The exchange landed in the middle of a familiar style inside the administration: senior officials publicly praising Trump at official events. Earlier this year. adviser Stephen Miller delivered an extended tribute to Trump during a Memphis roundtable discussion on crime. crediting Trump’s “vision. courage and determination” for what he described as major reductions in violent crime and illegal immigration.

At the time, Trump responded favorably, joking that FBI Director Kash Patel should try to surpass Miller’s praise.

  1. So they’re targeting tariff evasion AND “illegal goods” and that supposedly stops fentanyl. I’m not saying it won’t help, but $100 billion feels kinda made up. Who even audits that stuff.

  2. I think they’re talking about stopping imports by like, checking everybody’s packages at customs… but wouldn’t that mess up regular trade like farms and stuff? Also when they say “no where to run nowhere to hide” that’s such a dramatic phrase for paperwork.

  3. Tariff evasion is the part people keep missing. Like if you close the border, then smugglers just reroute through Canada or something right? Navarro always talks like he’s the mastermind and everyone else is clueless. But if it really stops fentanyl coming in, I guess whatever, just don’t start wasting money on some customs officer power trip.
