The case traces back to a class action lawsuit in which plaintiffs alleged that Google Assistant sometimes activated accidentally after falsely detecting wake words like “OK. Google. ” then recorded conversations it should not have heard. The plaintiffs further claimed that information gathered during those unintended activations was used for advertising purposes.
Google denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement agreement, but it still agreed to resolve the case by paying $68 million.
Whether the payout is easy to reach may depend as much on an email filter as it does on eligibility.
