Naomi Osaka knew exactly what she was doing when she stepped onto Court Suzanne at Roland Garros.

Spectators didn’t get the quiet build-up you expect from a first-round match at the French Open. Instead, the 28-year-old arrived in a wide-brimmed hat with a white veil, carrying a parasol as she walked out, then warmed up in a frilled jacket and a dress that looked like tentacles.

When it was time to be seen properly, she emerged in a black corset with a matching skirt. Right before her match began against German Laura Siegemund. Osaka unzipped the corset and revealed half of a shimmering custom gold Nike dress covered in sequins. She posed for pictures, then removed the skirt before the first set started.

The look was dramatic enough to feel more like something from a gladiator arena—or from The Hunger Games—than an opening-round runway at the French Open.

The garment itself has a story attached to it. It was designed by couturier Kevin Germanier, who works with upcycled materials, and he shared a video on Instagram showing the dress being cut by hand.

Osaka’s reputation for tournament fashion entrances isn’t new. but the latest reveal landed with the kind of instant attention that’s hard to miss. At Indian Wells. she arrived on court with tribal-inspired jewellery over her lips. nose and ears alongside a black mesh and cheetah-print Nike dress. trainers and jacket.

At this year’s Met Gala, she also drew a crowd during her entrance performance—wearing a white coat covered in red feathers designed to resemble blood before removing it to reveal a blood-red and crystal gown intended to look like exposed muscle, tendon and sinew.

With the gold Nike dress now out in the open and her first-round match underway against Siegemund, Osaka’s focus on-court had to come quickly. Off it, her message was already clear: even at Roland Garros, the entrance can be the headline.
