Morocco stuns Brazil as Neymar misses with calf injury

Brazil vs – Morocco drew level on a clinical strike from Ismael Saibari before Vinicius Jr. equalized for Brazil at MetLife Stadium. Neymar did not play because of a calf injury, and a late-game feel was shaped by a new Morocco coaching setup and a chaotic arrival experie

For Lia Bonadio. the match between Brazil and Morocco at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. New Jersey. felt like a kind of world-title event—her “Super Bowl” after flying from Mexico City for her first World Cup game. She arrived with a bold expectation on her sign—”3-1!”—and a crowd around her that was heavily rooting for Canarinho.

But the route to the stadium tested her patience before the teams even kicked a ball. Bonadio tried to take NJ Transit from Penn Station with a $98 round trip ticket. then was ushered toward the PATH train a block from Penn. ending up in Hoboken. New Jersey. She said NJ Transit officials ultimately helped her reach MetLife Stadium. but she wasn’t expecting the confusion that came along the way.

On the field, the opening drama arrived in the form of a goal Morocco scored first. Ismael Saibari raced onto a perfectly punted ball through the defense from Brahim Diaz. broke clear. and lifted his finish kick over a charging Alisson in the 21st minute. Morocco had controlled early, and the break looked like it might define the night—until Brazil found its response.

That equalizer came from Vinicius Jr. after a combination between Raphinha and Vinicius Jr. left him alone on the left side of the box. He cut inside onto his right foot and curled a brilliant shot into the top corner in the 32nd minute, canceling out Saibari’s opener.

By then, the stakes were clear in more ways than one. Brazil entered the match with legendary club manager Carlo Ancelotti leading the team and with several top players available. A call for veteran attacker Neymar appeared in the pregame setup. but Neymar ultimately did not play tonight because of a calf injury; he was with the squad.

Ancelotti’s plan leaned on the attacking punch associated with Brazil—Vinicius Jr., Raphina, and teenager Endrick were positioned to help lead the line—while Casemiro continued to patrol the midfield.

Morocco’s situation carried its own kind of tension off the pitch. The team had a new manager for the tournament, with inexperienced Mohamed Ouahbi stepping in to replace Walid Regragui. Regragui resigned after a controversial defeat in the final of the African Cup of Nations that later was reversed on paper.

The first-half swing—Morocco’s early control. then Brazil’s rapid leveling—also gave the match an immediate cultural flavor in the stadium area. The broadcast cameras found Tom Brady before kickoff Saturday, sharing a hug with Neymar near the field. Brady is a seven-time Super Bowl winner and a minority-owner of English club Birmingham City. Rapper Travis Scott was also on the sideline.

The game’s lived atmosphere spilled into the New York scene too: among the fans spotted at MetLife Stadium were supporters wearing New York Knicks gear, already talking about plans to get out quickly and head to watch parties.

As the match played on, at least one New York political figure was in the seats. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was shown sitting next to New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

On paper, the tournament stakes stretch far beyond one match. The 48 competing nations are divided into 12 groups of four. playing a round robin where teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. The top two teams in each group advance to the Round of 32, joining the eight best third-place squads. If teams finish equal on points. tiebreakers are determined by the greatest number of points from group

matches among the teams concerned. then superior goal difference in those matches. then the greatest number of goals scored in those matches. If ties remain. the criteria move to superior goal difference in all group matches. greatest number of goals in all group matches. and the highest team conduct score based on yellow and red cards. If teams are still tied on points. they are ranked according to the most recent published edition of the

FIFA Men’s World Ranking.

Brazil vs Morocco predictions before kickoff varied between expecting a tight 1-1 draw and a Brazil win by several goals. Seth Vertelney predicted Brazil 1-1 Morocco, Jon Arnold also picked Brazil 1-1 Morocco, Jesse Yomtov forecast Brazil 2-1 Morocco, and Victoria Hernandez chose Brazil 3-1 Morocco.

For now, the match had already delivered what many fans came for: momentum, a goal that forced a response, and a halftime score that matched the game’s volatility—Morocco leading early before Vinicius Jr. hauled Brazil level.

  1. So Neymar missed it cuz of a calf injury… why didn’t he just play through? athletes are always ‘hurt’ 🙄

  2. Not surprised Morocco scored first, their vibe has been different lately. Also the article says Neymar didn’t play but Brazil still almost had it? I’m confused lol.

  3. The NJ Transit part is the real story to me. Like why was she trying to take the PATH and ended up in Hoboken? That sounds like a setup for the upset honestly. Morocco coaching change too right? everything was chaos, even the trains.

  4. Wait Brazil drew level then Morocco ‘stuns’ them?? I thought Vinicius equalized so Brazil won or tied at least, no? Also $98 round trip ticket to MetLife sounds crazy, I can’t even. I guess the crowd was rooting for Brazil though? sorry I didn’t read all of it.
