Missing New Jersey Congressman Tom Kean Jr. Wins Primary

Tom Kean Jr. won his way back onto the November ballot Tuesday, even as the questions around his absence from both Washington and New Jersey have only grown louder.

The New Jersey Republican congressman. who ran unopposed for the party nomination. has not been seen in public for months and cast his last known vote in March. Ahead of the polls closing. Kean issued his first public statement in many months. saying he is recovering from a medical issue and promising to return to the public eye—though he did not provide an official timeline.

“I am more energized than ever to keep fighting for the people of New Jersey’s 7th District. Right now I am focused on my recovery and under the advice of healthcare professionals. I will transition from virtual work to in person work within a matter of weeks. At that time. I will be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition. ” Kean wrote in the statement. “Once again, I appreciate all of the prayer and patience from my constituents and colleagues. I understand the need for transparency on this matter and I look forward to sharing my experience with the public.”.

For many constituents, that message will sound familiar. It echoes what Kean told the New Jersey Globe in late May. his first interview since his lack of attendance in Washington. D.C. was publicly noticed. During that call. Kean said he anticipated returning to Congress “in the next couple of weeks” to both voting and the campaign trail. and he said he would be forthcoming about the reason for his absence. adding that he was on the road to full recovery.

But as the timetable he offers keeps stretching forward, his political presence has not fully disappeared. His social-media accounts have continued posting and sharing. Reports also emerged that Kean submitted financial disclosures indicating that he made stock trades during his time away. Roll Call said Tuesday that multiple floor speeches attributed to Kean have appeared in the Congressional Record despite his months-long absence from the U.S. Capitol.

House Speaker Mike Johnson. asked about the controversy Wednesday. said he spoke with Kean several days earlier and that Kean is in “good spirits.” Johnson also sought to limit what could be said publicly. “I do know what his health issue is. but he’s asked me not to disclose that. and I’m going to honor that. ” Johnson said. “When he explains it, it will all make sense. There’s nothing untoward about it at all.”.

The primary result sets up a difficult general election for Kean. Democrats on Tuesday nominated Navy veteran Rebecca Bennett to challenge him in the fall. Bennett won more than 40 percent of the vote in a crowded field. and the Cook Political Report rated the race for New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District as a “toss-up.”.

In her victory speech. Bennett went straight at Kean’s absence. calling him a “coward” and saying he was “nowhere to be found” during moments that Democrats have framed as defining tests—when President Donald Trump started a war in Iran and when his administration tried to open an immigration detention facility in Roxbury. New Jersey. Bennett added, “Tom Kane, Jr., wherever you are, you have failed this district.”.

Kean’s own campaign messaging has continued through the controversy as well. On Monday, his X account promoted Trump’s endorsement of him, with the president urging New Jersey residents to vote for Kean and declaring, “HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN.”

With Kean headed into the fall after winning the Republican primary. the central issue for voters is likely to stay where it has been for months: when. exactly. he plans to explain himself—and how fully he can convince residents who have watched him miss the moments they expected their representative to show up for.
