A mother-of-five who died in a single-car crash in Christchurch has been named by police. Miriata Lee Houkamau, 34, of Burnside, died in hospital after crashing into a fence on Grahams Rd, Burnside, on April 27. She was the only person in the car, police said. Emergency services were called to the scene between Cranbrook and Wayside Aves about 10.50pm. “The driver … was taken to hospital where she sadly died,” a police spokesperson said. Police have since been trying to find a witness to

the crash. Houkamau’s family and friends have reacted to media reports of the crash with sadness. One person said on social media: “Love you, my sister”. Another mourner said: “For the short time I knew Miriata, she was always cracking jokes and happy.” Houkamau was a mother of five, The Press reported. Her funeral was held in early May. The witness in a white SUV turned left onto Grahams Rd from Wairakei Rd and initially stopped when the crash happened, but left before emergency services

arrived. “Police are eager to know the registration and speak to the male driver as we believe he may be able to help in our investigation,” a spokesperson said. “If you know the registration of the vehicle, or are the driver, please contact police.”
