Michael Olise is France’s essential link to winning

Michael Olise’s World Cup debut for France has quickly turned him into the attack’s most trusted orchestrator, piling up five assists through four matches and fueling a 2-goal performance from Kylian Mbappé in France’s 2026 World Cup round of 32 win over Swede
For France, the World Cup revenge tour didn’t just run on Kylian Mbappé’s finishing on Tuesday night—it moved because of Michael Olise’s tempo.
At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Olise did more than nearly score with a bicycle kick. He set the rhythm for everything around him as France chased Sweden in the round of 32. eventually sending the match to extra-needed celebration with Mbappé again putting two goals on the board. Mbappé scored two of France’s three goals in the 3-?. win over Sweden on Tuesday, June 30, at MetLife Stadium, currently New York New Jersey Stadium for the 2026 World Cup.
Olise’s impact came in numbers, but also in the details. Through four matches. Olise—making his World Cup debut for the France national team—has recorded five assists. two of which arrived in Tuesday’s knockout win. Those five assists lead all players at the World Cup, with Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães the closest at four.
His first assist against Sweden arrived in the 53rd minute. Olise executed a pass through the legs of a Sweden defender—an opening that didn’t just create a chance, but carried it directly to Bradley Barcola, who converted the goal.
Then Olise delivered the kind of move that makes defenders feel helpless. In the 74th minute. he briefly dribbled around a Sweden defender before slipping a pinpoint pass into the box and around the penalty area for Mbappé. Mbappé scored his second goal of the match—and his 18th career World Cup goal—turning Olise’s setup into a decisive moment.
France’s midfield noticed the work even before the scoreboard. “(He was) magnificent,” France midfielder Malo Gusto said of Olise. “Michael, I think he was his usual self tonight. He really helped the team, as he always does. We’re very proud to have players like that, of course. And if that keeps helping us win, we’ll take it any day.”.
Thierry Henry. a former France national team member who now works as a Fox soccer analyst. framed Olise’s performance less as highlight-making and more as a complete two-way mindset. “What he does off the ball is second to none,” Henry said. “Because people always stay with what the guy does on the ball and usually when you’re that type of guy. technical or whatnot. sometimes you forget about your defensive duty. He doesn’t. He thinks about the game, the way he goes about the game. Michael is a freak.”.
Henry added that Olise’s vision stands apart. “The way he sees stuff is just not the same way that others can see stuff.”
Describing Olise as the connective tissue of France’s attack, Henry drew a sharp comparison. “This guy is on another planet. He’s just different. That’s why I said at the beginning of the game. MVP will always be Kylian because Kylian will put (up) numbers that nobody can do. But the most important player is Michael Olise,” Henry said.
Even France’s manager. Didier Deschamps. pointed back to a process that helps explain why this influence has become so prominent so quickly. “Michael has been putting in some high-level performances after a very good season. But with us, he needed a little bit of time to find his feet,” Deschamps said. “He has a very important influence (on the field).”.
Deschamps also tied Olise’s surge to how he slots into France’s attacking structure. He said Olise complements the other attacking players while tightening how the team moves between defense, midfield, and attack. “When Michael touches the ball, a lot happens,” Deschamps said. “He feeds the attacking players. but at the same time he links the defensive and offensive phases and the midfielders. where he often gives a good helping hand. too.”.
The next test arrives fast. Olise, Mbappé and France will shift focus to the round of 16, where they will take on Paraguay at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Deschamps urged restraint after the win, even as the team looks sharper with every match. “The knockout stage is difficult for everyone, even if we made things a little easier for ourselves today. We’re only in the last 16. We’re not going to get carried away. We’ll enjoy being here, then come back down to Earth within 48 hours,” he said. “We know what’s waiting for us in four days. First, we’ll take time to enjoy this victory, then we’ll have to be ready to do it all over again.”.

Olise got 5 assists?? that’s wild, France really got the whole playbook on him.
I only half watched but wasn’t this the Sweden match where Mbappé basically carried everything? Either way France finally scoring like they meant it.
Why does it say MetLife Stadium like it’s in “New York New Jersey” lol. Also 3-? win?? how do you not know the score… anyway, Olise sounds like the reason Mbappé did two goals, so yeah.
World Cup revenge tour sounds dramatic but it’s always Mbappé. I don’t get the whole “orchestrator” thing like he’s a conductor?? If he had 5 assists in 4 matches then Sweden must’ve been playing defense wrong or something.
