Clippers send Kawhi Leonard to Raptors in blockbuster swap

Kawhi Leonard is headed back to Toronto after the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to the Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and a package of future draft assets. The deal reshapes both teams’ timelines while Leonard’s pending NBA investigation linked to

By the time the NBA calendar flipped toward free agency, the Los Angeles Clippers’ decision felt like it had already been written in last season’s disappointment.

Kawhi Leonard—at 35. on the final stretch of his current contract—was traded to the Toronto Raptors in a deal that immediately changes how both franchises plan to build. The Clippers. who finished 42-40 and were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the play-in tournament. sent the 14-year veteran to Toronto for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick. plus a haul of future draft capital: unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033. second-round picks in 2030 and 2033. and a 2027 first-round pick swap.

For the Raptors, it’s a familiar reunion with a player whose presence once turned their franchise into a contender. Leonard—who turned 35 on June 29. 2026—played one season in Toronto before leaving at the end of it to join the Clippers. Now, after the move, he’s eligible to reshape the Raptors’ immediate title runway.

Leonard’s contract situation is central to why the trade is so consequential. He has one season left on his deal, which is scheduled to pay him $50.3 million. With the Raptors now holding his rights. he can sign a two-year. $123.7 million extension with his new team. a pathway reported as available via ESPN.

Clippers fans may have hoped the veteran would stay. Leonard expressed a desire to remain with the Clippers. the organization he first signed with as a free agent before the 2019-20 NBA season. But the Clippers were reluctant to make a long-term commitment. That mismatch between desire and timing ended with a trade that sends a seven-time All-Star out of Los Angeles after one more season on his existing contract.

On the court, Leonard’s production hasn’t been the question. Last season, he averaged a career-high 27.4 points per game and finished seventh in the NBA MVP voting. In 2025-26 with the Clippers, he also averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.

Still, Toronto’s bet requires more than stats. The Raptors had to trade away a couple key pieces to execute the deal, but they kept enough of their roster intact to be viewed as top Eastern Conference contenders during the 2026-27 season.

Heading into free agency. the Raptors’ rotation—positioned around the addition of Leonard—includes G RJ Barrett. G Jaden Bradley**. G Immanuel Quickley. G Jamal Shead. G Garrett Temple*. G Ja’Kobe Walter. F Scottie Barnes. F Kawhi Leonard. F Allen Graves**. F Collin Murray-Boyles. F Jamison Battle. F Sandro Mamukelashvili*. F Jonathan Mogbo*. F/C Trayce Jackson-Davis. C Jakob Poeltl. G Chucky Hepburn^. G A.J. Lawson^, G Alijah Martin^*, with *free agent, **rookie, and ^two-way contract noted in the roster breakdown.

The sequence of the trade also echoes Leonard’s own career turns. Across his 15-year career. he has played for three teams: he spent seven seasons with the San Antonio Spurs to start his career. then played the 2018-19 season with the Toronto Raptors. and has been with the Clippers since the 2019-20 season.

That earlier Toronto chapter is part of why the Raptors are swinging now. After winning a championship in 2014 with the Spurs. Leonard was traded to the Raptors in 2018 and led a historic run to the franchise’s first-ever NBA title. Toronto beat the Warriors in six games in 2019. with Leonard named NBA Finals MVP for the second time in his career. At the end of that season, he left to sign with the Clippers.

As Leonard’s return creates a new spotlight on Toronto’s competitiveness, the trade also lands against another unresolved storyline—one that has nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with rules.

Even as Leonard leaves the Clippers, his legacy includes an NBA pending investigation into the franchise’s conduct tied to an endorsement deal Leonard signed after joining the team. Leonard and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer have reportedly been interviewed as part of the investigation.

The allegation is that Leonard signed a no-show endorsement deal with Aspiration. a company that sponsored the Clippers. as a way to circumvent the NBA’s salary cap and collective bargaining agreement. Ballmer has admitted to introducing Leonard to Aspiration’s leaders. but the Clippers have denied any allegations of illegal behavior concerning the NBA’s CBA.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said at the NBA Finals that the league is close to wrapping up its investigation into the matter.

With the on-court stakes shifting immediately—Leonard now eligible for a two-year. $123.7 million extension with the Raptors—the off-court questions remain. The Raptors are clearly paying for a chance at a championship window led by a player who already delivered one title in Toronto. The Clippers. meanwhile. have chosen to rebuild around a future featuring Brandon Ingram. Gradey Dick. and draft assets spanning multiple years—while the franchise’s pending investigation continues to hover over how the NBA ultimately draws the line.

  1. So Toronto just gets him back and suddenly they’re good again? I swear every time I blink a star is getting shipped. Also that contract number like 50 mil??

  2. I don’t get why the Clippers gave Ingram AND Dick AND future picks just for Kawhi’s “pending investigation.” Like if there’s drama wouldn’t it be smarter to wait? Or maybe they already knew he’d get cleared, idk.

  3. The Raptors are gonna run it back with Kawhi like it’s 2019 or whatever, but he’s 35 now… I saw something about a 2-year extension and $123.7 million and that seems insane. Plus the article says pending NBA investigation, so is he even gonna play right away? Clippers keep saying “timeline” like that fixes everything, lol.
