By early afternoon, South Florida’s heat won’t just sit in the air—it will press on people. The National Weather Service says “ample humidity” and “sunshine” will push feels-like temperatures above 100 degrees across much of the region today, even as actual highs land in the 90s.
In Miami, the heat index is forecast to peak at 105 degrees on June 2. Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Homestead are expected to see heat indices around 102 degrees.
Storm threats are layered into the same day of extreme heat. The NWS also lists a marginal risk—level one of five—for severe storms over the northeastern portion of South Florida, including Belle Glade, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. The window for potential storms runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The weather service expects hazards to be more common than widespread: “outside of isolated hail/wind. ” the most likely concerns are heavy rainfall and lightning. It also says isolated strong to severe wind gusts and marginally severe hail will be possible with the strongest storms. and that localized flooding can’t be ruled out.
For people trying to get through the day—whether that means commuting. working outdoors. or simply keeping children and older relatives comfortable—the NWS guidance is direct. Hydrate before you’re thirsty. Stay in a cool place, especially during the afternoon heat. Use air conditioning if it’s available. because the service warns that “fans and open windows will not be enough.” It also recommends limiting outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

105 heat index?? just don’t go outside i guess
They say use AC but like… my power bill is already insane. If fans and open windows “won’t be enough” then what are we supposed to do, freeze in the dark? Also storms later like ok so we’re just cooked then wet.
So wait, it’s gonna be 105 but then thunderstorms from 2 to 10? That sounds like hurricane season behavior, like the storms always come with big wind and hail. I heard lightning counts as severe too so everyone should stay in a bathtub or something lol.
I don’t really get how the actual highs are in the 90s but it feels like 105. Isn’t that like fake science? My brother said it’s because the storm clouds “trap the heat” or whatever. Then they say marginal severe risk, but also localized flooding can happen… so basically it’s either fine or it’s chaos, got it.
