Mel McLaughlin reveals half a lung removed after surgery

Channel Seven presenter Mel McLaughlin says she had half a lung removed after being diagnosed with stage two lung cancer, and she shared the news in a personal bio and an emotional post while watching Australia beat Turkey at the 2026 World Cup in Vancouver.
When Australia’s Socceroos delivered their World Cup shock in Vancouver against Turkey, Mel McLaughlin was there to feel it. But she wasn’t just watching a match.
McLaughlin, 46, used the moment to bring her own health struggle into public view. The Channel Seven sports presenter. currently overseas in the Americas covering the 2026 FIFA World Cup. had already been open about her diagnosis after revealing in December 2025 that she was battling stage two lung cancer.
In the bio of her Instagram account, she later wrote, “It’s a game of two halves. Credit to the boys. 1.5 lungs.” The line landed with weight because it matched the grim reality she disclosed again through her account while Australia took the win.
McLaughlin said the cancer surgery cost her more than she expected. She underwent surgery on her left lung earlier in 2025. when a malignant tumour was removed along with a large section of the organ—meaning half a lung was taken. She missed several months of work after the operation, before returning to Australian screens in April.
Her cancer battle entered public conversation late last year, including the personal detail that lung cancer claimed her sister’s life a decade earlier. When she discussed her diagnosis, it was also clear how hard the recovery had been for her day-to-day.
After her first return to screens in April, she took to social media immediately to update fans. “Remembered how to read and didn’t run out of breath – I’ll take that for now. ” she wrote. adding that her “wonderful. beautiful. dysfunctional work family” held her hand and helped her deal with “my nerves and anxiety. ” before calling out the “Poor kids having to put up with me!”.
Following the Socceroos’ win over Turkey, McLaughlin shared another raw reaction from the stands. “It’s too much,” she wrote below a picture of her watching the match—an emotional message that reflected how big the moment felt, even as her body continues to carry the consequences of that surgery.
Taken together. the details trace a single thread: a presenter who missed months after a life-changing operation. who spent the last year living with the realities of reduced lung capacity. and who still chose to mark a football high point with the same honesty she brought to her cancer announcement.

Half a lung?? wow that’s insane. Hopefully she’s good now.
So she says “1.5 lungs” like it’s a joke but then it’s serious cancer… I don’t get it. Also why is this happening during a World Cup game, like focus on the match?
Stage two lung cancer and they removed half her left lung and she still did TV?? Respect but also I feel like they leave stuff out. Was it because she smoked or was it just random? I’m not trying to be rude just curious.
Man I saw her post about the Socceroos winning and thought she was just being dramatic like “it’s too much” over soccer lol. Didn’t realize it was tied to the lung surgery and her anxiety. Half a lung removed sounds like a death sentence though, so glad she’s back. Also Vancouver World Cup—wild timing.
