Meghan Markle accused of ‘controlling the narrative too tightly’ as PR expert unpacks her ‘perception problem,’ flagging estrangement from her father

Meghan Markle may need to loosen up to connect with the public.

According to a public relations expert, the Duchess of Sussex isn’t finding success in her career because she tends to manage how people see her.

Despite Meghan’s Netflix series being axed and her As Ever brand struggling to find a customer base, the Suits star tries to portray that everything is perfect despite the numerous rifts on both her and Prince Harry‘s sides of the family.

“Controlling the narrative too tightly can work against her,” PR maven Rebecca May told Daily Mail.

“I don’t think it is necessarily just an authenticity issue either. Meghan could have very real reasons that we don’t publicly know about for the estrangement from her father [Thomas Markle Sr.], for instance. But from a reputation point of view, it has become an elephant in the room,” she noted.

Meghan needs to express ‘some vulnerability’ to the public

May believes that if Meghan were open about her personal struggles, the world would better understand who she is.

“There needs to be some vulnerability and something that feels less practiced and managed,” the specialist remarked.

“You can still protect your privacy without everything feeling so controlled,” May noted.

‘Hollywood has been difficult to crack’ for Meghan

While the 45-year-old had years of television success before marrying into the royal family, her producing career hasn’t been as a crowning achievement.

“From a brand and PR perspective, the difficulty today is converting the huge level of interest in her and her life into genuine interest in the projects she is trying to build,” May claimed.

“That, for me, is why Hollywood has been difficult to crack,” she continued. “The person continually risks becoming bigger than the product itself and the project simply gets overshadowed.”

Meghan won’t find success in Hollywood until her ‘perception changes’

Until Meghan’s public persona undergoes changes, it’s likely she’ll continue to fail to reach the public.

“You can’t keep changing the project if the public perception of the person behind it stays the same,” May noted.

“Until that perception changes, I think whatever Meghan does next risks being viewed through the same lens,” she added.
