The hunt for a certain stuffed toy gets a new target date: McDonald’s has teased a FIFA Men’s World Cup Happy Meal featuring Squishmallows, telling fans to circle June 9 on their calendars.
The fast-food chain posted the promo on May 28 across its social media platforms. including an X graphic with the message. “Hard to pick a fave in this Squishmallows huddle puddle. FIFA World Cup Happy Meal out June 9.” The tease doesn’t spell out how long the World Cup-themed Happy Meals will last. or which specific Squishmallows will be included.
What the graphic does show is Squishmallows wearing jerseys representing different countries set to play in the tournament. The FIFA Men’s World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday, June 11.
The new World Cup release lands on the heels of McDonald’s bringing back its Happy Meals with Squishmallows for a limited time earlier this month. Those meals include one of a dozen different toys. Among them is a new character named Halley, described as a previously unseen Squishmallow of the salamander-shaped axolotl type.
Each Squishmallow toy comes with a character hang tag that details the character’s name and story. For Halley, the tag references an “intergalactic travel ability.” Every toy also includes a code that can be scanned to play an interactive game.
The response to the brand’s previous run shows why McDonald’s is leaning into the format again. The Squishmallows Happy Meals were a big hit when they were last available in December 2023. The plush toy line has also grown into a mass following: toy maker Jazwares has sold more than 400 million Squishmallows plush toys worldwide.
At this point, the calendar is the clearest signal McDonald’s has given. The company’s May 28 post points to a June 9 release, while the World Cup itself begins June 11—close enough that fans will likely be looking for the toys almost as eagerly as the games.
