McConnell hospitalized Sunday; care described as ‘excellent’

McConnell hospitalized – Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, his spokesperson said, adding only that the 84-year-old is receiving “excellent care.” The statement did not explain the cause or his condition.
Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, according to his spokesperson, David Popp.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” Popp said.
The brief statement offered little beyond reassurance. It did not address what caused the hospitalization, or what McConnell’s condition is.
McConnell, 84, has dealt with a run of health issues in recent years. In March 2023, he suffered a concussion and broken ribs after a fall. Months later, in July, he froze mid-sentence during a news conference. CNN later reported that McConnell had suffered two other falls earlier that year.
Those recent incidents sit against a longer political timeline that still defines how Washington reads moments like this. McConnell became a senator in 1985 and served as the Senate’s majority leader starting in 2015. In that role, he helped shape President Donald Trump’s first term, including helping usher through hundreds of federal judges.
During Trump’s second term, however, McConnell—no longer in Senate leadership—has often found himself at odds with the president.
Right now, the immediate question is simple and urgent: what led to McConnell’s admission Sunday morning, and how is he doing?
This is a developing story and will be updated.
