May 5 observances: disability rights, midwives, constitution day

On May 5, Misryoum highlights several international and national observances, from disability rights to International Day of Midwives and Constitution Day.

May 5 is not just another day on the calendar, it gathers several international observances and national milestones under one date.

Today, people mark the International Day of Struggle for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, focused on equal rights and against discrimination toward people with physical, mental, or sensory limitations.. Misryoum notes that the tradition traces back to 1992, when participants in 17 European countries held coordinated actions demanding equal rights.

This day matters because it keeps attention on inclusion, not as a slogan, but as a measurable standard in everyday life.

Also on May 5, International Day of Midwives is observed.. The initiative was discussed in 1987 during a conference of the International Confederation of Midwives, and since 1992 the celebration has expanded to more than 50 countries.. The goal is to inform the public about how essential midwives are for safer care during pregnancy and childbirth.

For many families, the work of a midwife is decisive. That is why Misryoum treats this observance as more than ceremonial: it is a reminder of expertise that directly affects health outcomes.

May 5 is also recognized as Printing Day in Belarus, chosen to honor the first release of the newspaper “Pravda” in 1912. While Belarusian publishing history stretches further back, the date stands out as a public marker of media and the written word.

In Kyrgyzstan, the Constitution Day is celebrated. In 1993, the Kyrgyz Republic’s Constitution was adopted at the XII session of the Supreme Council, and the country’s official name changed accordingly.

Meanwhile, across the wider world, May 5 has been associated with major historical events. Misryoum reports that a flight connected with the “Aeroflot” airline returned to Sheremetyevo shortly after takeoff after damage occurred during landing, with fatalities recorded in that incident.

Finally, for those following religious and name traditions, May 5 is observed as the Day of Luke in the Orthodox calendar, honoring the apostle Luke. It is also a day when people celebrate their angel day, including Vitaliy, Dmitry, Fyodor, and Platon.
