Massachusetts doctor indicted on 81 new sexual assault charges

A Massachusetts grand jury indicted Dr. Derrick Todd on 81 additional counts tied to alleged abuse of patients at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital from 2017 to 2023, expanding an already large case.

A Massachusetts doctor already facing dozens of rape and assault charges has been indicted on more than 80 additional counts, prosecutors say.

The Suffolk County District Attorney announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted Dr.. Derrick Todd on 21 counts of rape, 59 counts of indecent assault and battery, and one count of assault with intent to rape.. The new indictment adds to a growing set of allegations he faces across multiple jurisdictions.

Prosecutors said the accused conduct occurred while Todd worked as a rheumatologist and general practitioner at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. The allegations include performing unnecessary breast and pelvic exams on patients, prosecutors said.

According to the district attorney, the incidents date to a period from 2017 to 2023 and involve 22 victims aged 17 to 56. The case, as described by prosecutors, is part of a broader pattern of charges that has expanded as more victims and evidence came forward over time.

For many survivors, the decision to report abuse can take years, especially in situations where a patient is told to trust someone with medical authority. Prosecutors said the women were violated by a medical professional—the person they turned to for care when they were vulnerable.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said the indictment is extraordinary not only because of its volume, but because of what prosecutors characterize as the nature of the alleged abuse.. He described the scale of alleged victimization and the trauma left in its wake as something his office has not encountered before.

The new Suffolk County charges are separate from an earlier case in Middlesex County, where Todd previously pleaded not guilty to 22 counts of rape and indecent assault and battery.. Todd is also named in multiple ongoing medical malpractice lawsuits, and Misryoum understands that hundreds of former patients filed a class action complaint in 2024, according to the district attorney’s remarks.

One question many readers may have is how an already wide criminal case can keep growing.. In investigations like this, prosecutors often pursue additional counts when a grand jury considers newly presented evidence and testimony, sometimes reflecting a fuller picture of alleged misconduct over different time periods or locations.

Defense attorney Ingrid Martin, representing Todd, said in a statement that the legal team had received no information about the new charges at the time of her comment and therefore had no response. Todd is expected to be arraigned on the new counts in Suffolk Superior Court at a later date.

Beyond the courtroom steps ahead, the indictment underscores a larger issue about patient safety and oversight in healthcare.. When allegations involve intimate examinations, the harm can be difficult to measure in the short term—patients may carry lasting fear, avoidance of care, or distrust that extends well beyond the alleged incident.

Hayden said he wants survivors to know his office is standing with them as the case progresses.. As the legal process moves forward, the focus will shift to how prosecutors prove the allegations, and how the defense challenges them, with Misryoum noting that the added counts will shape the scope of what the court ultimately has to address.
