When “NCIS: Origins” kicks into gear this fall, it won’t just be the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs you’re following.

Mark Harmon will be there too—credited as a full-time presence across the season as Gibbs steps back into the story starting October Tuesday nights.

CBS confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, that Harmon, 74, will appear in all episodes of “NCIS: Origins” Season 3. The network also tied his return to a present-day mystery that connects directly to Gibbs’ Camp Pendleton days in the 1990s. The show has long leaned on the wider “NCIS” universe. and this is the moment it brings Harmon’s Gibbs closer to the center of the action.

The official NCISVerse Instagram page marked the change with a video featuring two empty director’s chairs near the set, with “Gibbs” written in big letters. At the end of the clip, Harmon says, “You’ll see,” setting up a question fans have already started asking: how all of this will work.

Harmon’s Gibbs, living off the grid—until he isn’t

In the story’s established timeline, Harmon’s Gibbs remains retired from NCIS work. He has been living off the grid in Alaska since retiring in 2021.

That said, Harmon has already tested this return before Season 3. He appeared in the “NCIS: Origins” 2024 series premiere to kick things off. Later. during the first crossover event between “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins” in November. older. wiser Gibbs made a special guest appearance. In that episode, lone wolf Gibbs got a new special friend: an adorable dog.

So when CBS says Harmon’s Gibbs will take a full-season role in Season 3, it follows a pattern the franchise has been building—bringing the icon back in ways that feel like more than a simple cameo.

Why this matters for a show that hasn’t fully found its audience

“NCIS: Origins” has not reached its full potential TV audience despite being a solid show in the “NCIS” universe. The network’s decision to bring Harmon back full-time reads like a deliberate push to draw more viewers deeper into the early years of the Gibbs story.

The pitch is straightforward: Harmon’s presence should make it harder to look away from the young Gibbs training in Camp Pendleton in the early ’90s—years before the events of “NCIS.”

That connection also stays inside the “NCIS” canon, which is part of what makes the series’ timeline feel carefully tethered rather than loosely expanding.

Who else is in the cast, and who’s behind the show

Alongside Harmon, “NCIS: Origins” Season 3 stars Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez, and Caleb Foote.

The series is show-run by David J. North. Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon—who played a younger version of Gibbs on “NCIS”—serves as an executive producer.

It’s a franchise detail fans tend to notice, and it also adds a familiar layer to the Gibbs story—one that moves smoothly between generations.
