7-Eleven turns 60-year Slurpee anniversary into sweet drama

7-Eleven is marking 60 years of Slurpees with a limited-edition Mountain Dew Confetti Chill, a zesty lemon cake-flavored frozen drink that’s already sparked sharply divided reactions online. The retailer is also staging “Slurpee Date” events for July 11 and co
By the time the Confetti Chill lands in cups across the country, the argument has already started.
In the late 1950s, Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen franchise operator in Kansas, built a frozen beverage machine using parts from an automobile air conditioner. In 1966, 7-Eleven licensed his invention for one of America’s gas-station favorites: the Slurpee.
Sixty years later, Knedlik’s legacy is being celebrated with a birthday flavor that’s anything but faithful to the original idea of a simple, icy treat. To mark the Slurpee’s “diamond anniversary,” 7-Eleven released a limited-edition birthday flavor: Mountain Dew Confetti Chill.
The company describes it as a “zesty lemon cake treat in frozen drink form,” and the flavor is available now through August 29.
Online, the response split quickly. One fan on X applauded the announcement. writing. “This is why we live in the greatest country on earth!” Others were less convinced. In a Reddit feed, one person said, “Eww. I would still try though.” Another replied to a question about whether they enjoyed the Slurpee with a comparison that captured the skepticism: “Yes but it’s like drinking frosting.”.
Then came the sharper reactions. One user commented, “I can’t even imagine the flavor of this abomination. Hold the handle down til it all comes out n then walk away.”
For 7-Eleven, the controversy is familiar territory. Many fans compared Confetti Chill to Mountain Dew’s June 2021 limited-edition Cake Smash flavor. That drink was released for a Pepsi sweepstakes and later sold online.
The disagreement isn’t only about taste—it’s also about how far these flavors should go. An Instagram user criticized the company’s choice, saying “Mtn Dew clearly has not learned that people are done buying overly sweet AI-slop-style drinks.”
Behind the counter, though, the birthday celebration isn’t limited to a new flavor. Select 7-Eleven locations in California. New Jersey. Ohio. and Texas are hosting a “Slurpee Date” experience on July 11 (7-11) designed for couples and friends who want to skip formal plans for a casual Slurpee night.
The event includes a photo-op date bench and a limited-edition bedazzled double straw. Love Island Season 6 star JaNa Craig is joining the collaboration, with 7-Eleven positioning the moment as a nudge toward easygoing first dates and spontaneous summer hangouts.
Customers who don’t live near one of the select locations aren’t being left out. Fans can still pick up three commemorative 60th Anniversary Slurpee Day cups and multicolored sugar crystals for birthday flair. And for people just curious about the special-edition Confetti Chill but not ready to commit to it. 7-Eleven will continue its annual tradition of a free small slurpee on July 11. available at participating locations nationwide.
The question now is simple, and it’s already being argued online: after 60 years, is a Slurpee anniversary best celebrated with comfort—or with something that feels like lemon cake confetti in liquid form?
