The final minutes of the Padres’ 9-3 victory over the Orioles on Saturday ended with a pitch that turned into a punishment.

San Diego pitcher Ron Marinaccio has been issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for hitting Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson shortly before the end of the game. Michael Hill. Major League Baseball’s senior vice president for on-field operations. ruled that Marinaccio intentionally hit Henderson with the pitch.

The incident happened in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, and with San Diego leading by six. Marinaccio hit Henderson with the first pitch of an at-bat at that point in the game. Marinaccio was ejected, and manager Craig Stammen came out to argue and was tossed as well.

Hill also announced that Craig Stammen was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount in connection with the same play.

Stammen elected to serve his suspension on Monday night, when San Diego visited St. Louis. Marinaccio, though, chose to appeal. Hill said Marinaccio will be eligible to keep playing while his appeal process is ongoing.

The sequence is what makes it stand out: a late-inning pitch that led to ejection and arguing, followed quickly by MLB’s decision that the act was intentional—along with suspensions and fines for both the pitcher and the manager.

  1. I didn’t even realize he hit him on purpose. Like if it was a mistake why would they toss the manager too? 9-3 is a blowout, just throw meatballs and be done.

  2. So he gets 3 games but can still “keep playing” while appealing? That’s kinda wild. I swear MLB always says it’s intentional and then acts like it’s still up in the air. Also the St. Louis part like that matters??

  3. Bottom of the ninth, two outs, up by six… yeah that’s definitely when you don’t need to do anything extra. But also why does the headline say banned three games if he’s still eligible? Makes no sense. Maybe Henderson was trash talking and Marinaccio got emotional, who knows.
