Police fatally shoot suspect after chase in Uptown

police shoot – A 63-year-old man was killed Monday night in Uptown after an argument turned into gunfire, and later police shot the suspect during a chase after he allegedly raised a gun at officers. Investigators from the Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office

Uptown felt like a different kind of quiet after 8:25 p.m. Monday, when police say gunfire cut through a confrontation on North Clark Street—and ended with a second shooting during a chase minutes later.

In the 4800 block of North Clark Street. 20th District officers were on patrol when they responded to a call of shots fired. Police said they found a 63-year-old man who had been arguing with a gunman he knew. During the fight, the alleged gunman opened fire, hitting the man multiple times. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man’s name has not been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

After the shooting, the alleged gunman fled. Officers pursued him and found him in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street. During the pursuit, police said the alleged gunman “turned and raised his firearm in the direction of officers,” prompting officers to discharge their guns and shoot him.

Officers rendered aid. The suspect was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where police said he was in critical condition.

A gun was recovered at the scene. Police also said three officers were taken to a hospital for observation and were listed in good condition.

Two separate investigative efforts are now underway. Police said the Investigative Response Team is investigating the circumstances involving the shootings. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating and urged anyone with information to contact them.

  1. I saw “raised his firearm” and instantly thought they probably just wanted him gone. Like why chase instead of just waiting? Idk though, news always leaves stuff out.

  2. Wait so a 63-year-old got shot first, then the guy got shot during the chase? That sounds like both sides were firing back-to-back. Either way, those neighborhoods need better de-escalation… unless he really pointed it at them like they say.

  3. “Different kind of quiet” is right… but I don’t buy the timing. They say it was minutes later on West Argyle? That’s like far, so either the story’s mixed up or the chase was longer than they’re saying. Also why is the gun not named? If they recovered it, then we should already know whose it was.
