What makes the diagnosis especially frightening, Cooke explained, is how long the condition can remain silent. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that Brugada syndrome is often asymptomatic for years. and when symptoms do appear. they can include palpitations. fainting and sudden cardiac arrest. Cooke said she understands why so many people fear the possibility—particularly when it involves young, otherwise healthy individuals.

“It’s like young, healthy people that actually are the ones that end up passing away from it out of nowhere, so it’s a little scary,” she said. “It feels like a gray cloud and like a fear of, you never know when it could happen type thing.”

Over time, Cooke said she’s found a different way to carry the knowledge—helped by a cousin who also shares her diagnosis. Speaking about their conversations, she described how her cousin framed the situation through faith.

“One of my cousins who also has Brugada syndrome. we were talking about it for a while and he was like. ‘Hey. if you believe in God’ — which I do — ‘your time’s gonna be your time no matter what. so whether it’s this or somethin’ else. just live your life and treat people well and hope for the best. ’” Cooke shared.

Now, Cooke says the fear has shifted into urgency. She told the outlet that the diagnosis has sharpened her outlook on living day to day.

“So it was scary at first. but I think now I’m just like — it gives me even more of a purpose just to live my life every day like it could be my last. because you just never know. All of us in this room. you never know when it’s your last. so just do your best and if that’s what takes me. that’s what takes me and that’s alright. ” she added.

The singer’s health awareness comes as her career momentum continues. Cooke is set to launch her Baby Blues World Tour, beginning in Cleveland, Ohio, this coming September, with stops across the U.S. She’ll also play several dates in the U.K. throughout January 2027.

  1. Wait so she didn’t have symptoms but it can still just kill you?? That sounds like every random warning label ever. I feel like they should’ve caught it earlier in school health class or something. Anyway hope the tour goes ok.

  2. Brugada?? Isn’t that the one where you shouldn’t eat bananas or drink caffeine or whatever? My cousin said his doctor told him no energy drinks and then it went away (kinda). Idk if this is the same thing but the title makes it sound like she’s always gonna be “in danger.”

  3. Not to be dramatic but sudden cardiac arrest “out of nowhere” is basically my nightmare. I always thought if your heart was messed up you’d feel it, like chest pain or palpitations, not “years of nothing” and then bam. Also why do genetics always get blamed like it’s fate, but yeah sure get tested and hope for the best I guess.
