A manhunt was underway on Thursday, June 4, after two “armed and dangerous” inmates escaped a North Carolina jail near the Virginia state line. The FBI said a $40,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the capture of Michael Lewis Miles Jr. and Lishawn Knott.

The escape happened at 2 p.m. on June 3 from the Vance County Detention Center in Henderson, about 45 miles north of Raleigh and close to the North Carolina–Virginia state line. The men were being held on multiple state drug trafficking and gun-related charges.

The FBI said both men were familiar with one another prior to their arrests, and may be traveling together or separately. Both are considered armed and dangerous and are not to be approached.

In a post on X. the FBI Charlotte Field Office asked the public for help in real time. urging people to “check home surveillance video or trail/hunting camera images to assist in real-time tracking of the escapees.” The agency also told residents to lock vehicles. close garage doors. and lock up sheds.

The reward is being offered through the FBI and the Vance County Crime Stoppers, up to $40,000 total—up to $20,000 for each inmate. Anyone with information about the escaped prisoners’ whereabouts was asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.

The timeline is stark: the men disappeared at 2 p.m. on June 3, and by June 4 the FBI was already coordinating public assistance and offering a substantial financial incentive—making clear how quickly authorities are moving to close the gap between escape and recapture.
