Man United extend Tom Heaton, despite long absence

Man United – Manchester United have agreed a new one-year contract with third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, keeping the 40-year-old in Old Trafford’s leadership group as plans around Senne Lammens and potential exits for Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana gather pace.

Manchester United moved quickly to secure one familiar presence around their goalkeeping room. Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford, the club announced.

Heaton is 40 and, despite returning to his boyhood club in the summer of 2021, has managed only three appearances since then. His last game for United came in February 2023, yet he remains part of the dressing-room leadership group and is viewed internally as an important figure behind the scenes.

The timing matters because United’s immediate focus is also on who will sit behind Senne Lammens next. If Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana leave this summer, United are expected to look for a new back-up goalkeeper. Still. Heaton was widely expected to be retained for another 12 months after a role described as important in helping Lammens settle during his first season at the club.

For Heaton, the new deal takes him into his 21st season as a professional footballer. His journey to United began in the club’s academy. and he returned five years ago after a career that included Premier League stints with Aston Villa and Burnley. as well as winning one England cap a decade ago. He also made his debut for the club in 2005, on loan at Swindon Town during his first spell.

“It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” Heaton said. “You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success.”

“I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox welcomed the agreement. He said: “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.”

“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”

The contract comes with clear tension in United’s broader squad planning. Bayindir. who is currently No.2. could return to Turkey with Besiktas after United rejected an offer from the Istanbul club in the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Onana has been told he has no future at Old Trafford after being replaced by Lammens. Onana spent this season on loan at Trabzonspor, who want to keep him.

United have already moved on several players this summer, with Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia leaving as free agents. Against that backdrop, keeping Heaton might look like a purely sentimental decision—but the club’s message is that his value is active, not symbolic.

Last month, Casemiro explained why Heaton matters despite the lack of minutes. “He is very important for us,” the Brazil star said. “He pushes the training and he pushes in the game. Of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy. He helps the room so much.”

As United weigh possible changes behind Lammens, Heaton’s new contract locks in a veteran who has not played a first-team game in over three years, but is still trusted to set the standards in the place where performances begin long before kick-off.
