Jared Verse practices in No. 8, causing overlap

Jared Verse walked onto the practice field in No. 8, and for Browns fans, it immediately felt like a small decision with big symbolism.

Verse’s number of choice is the same one that has been officially issued in 2025 to quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel. a rookie. started six games. but the jersey overlap now puts both players in the same spot—at least on the surface—because it’s an awkward look for a team that has to sort its numbers cleanly. especially as the season approaches.

The discomfort didn’t stay quiet. An account known for posting fabricated quotes—@FootballCravee—posted a false quote from Gabriel on Wednesday that went somewhat viral because it sounded semi-plausible at first glance. That detail added to the noise around a situation that’s already unusual: two players tied to the same number. with Verse showing up in it as part of the daily work.

There’s a window where teams can double up on jersey numbers during the 90-man portion of the calendar. but the overlap still reads strange. Verse and Gabriel both wearing No. 8 isn’t just a clerical annoyance—it’s the kind of visual conflict that keeps drawing attention. because it suggests this change may be more than a temporary placeholder.

At some point, No. 8 will become official for one of them. Verse appears intent on wearing it. and if Gabriel ends up not being on the Browns’ 53-man roster come Week 1. the simplest explanation becomes the most likely one. Still, the timing matters. Even a “for now” situation becomes a problem when the team’s roster and official branding have to line up.

Why is any of this worth thinking about in the first place?. The answer is that it exposes how teams treat jersey numbers like both assets and statements. The team owns the numbers, and it can reclaim a number and reissue it if it chooses. When a player’s value to the team is no longer comparable to the role he’s expected to play—like a player who could end up third string at best—there’s a logic in how teams handle the switch: the team can tell a guy the number is being reassigned to someone expected to be in the starting lineup.

From Verse’s side. the question becomes basic: why pay for something when you can just wear it and let the team make it official?. The source of the tension is clear—Verse is currently more important to the Browns than Gabriel—and that’s exactly why it wouldn’t make sense. at least in this framing. for Verse to compensate Gabriel for No. 8.

On Wednesday, Verse took the first visible step toward making that happen. He showed up for practice wearing No. 8, effectively signaling a transfer that’s not yet paperwork-complete but already on display. If the move is going to be finalized. it’s up to Gabriel and/or the Browns to make the transfer official without Verse handing Gabriel anything for the number.

The Browns, though, can’t drag their feet. Verse jerseys are already available for preorder, and they can’t be printed and distributed until his number is official. In other words. whatever the team decides has to happen fast—because fans can buy the jersey now. but the organization can’t fulfill it under the wrong number forever.

Jared Verse Dillon Gabriel Browns jersey number No. 8 practice Week 1 NFL

  1. So wait, Dillon Gabriel already has No. 8 but Jared Verse is wearing it in practice? Sounds like the Browns can’t count jerseys. Also that fake quote page is wild, like people actually believe that stuff?

  2. I don’t get it, I thought teams couldn’t share numbers at all? Like doesn’t the NFL shut that down immediately. If Gabriel is a “rookie” and started six games then why would he just disappear from the roster Week 1… unless they’re trading him or something. The article says overlap window but then it’s “symbolism” which is kinda dramatic.

  3. This whole thing feels like clickbait but also I’m like… jerseys matter? If Verse is practicing in 8 then maybe he’s taking over and Gabriel’s done, simple. And that @FootballCravee account posting a fake quote… that’s probably why everyone’s freaking out. The part about 90-man calendar or whatever, I’m lost, but it sounds like they’re still sorting it out which is kinda embarrassing for a team. Browns gonna Browns I guess.
