Mamdani’s wedding slip sets NYC buzzing over Swift

Mamdani’s wedding – During a Monday press conference about safety for a July 5 FIFA World Cup game in New Jersey, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to confirm Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are getting married in New York over the Fourth of July weekend—then said he’s no

When the mayor started talking about keeping New York safe for big events, the sentence that followed landed like a spark.

During Monday’s press conference. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was discussing plans to ensure safety measures for a FIFA World Cup game in New Jersey on July 5. He said he was “fully confident in the work of the NYPD. as well as our state partners. in delivering that safe experience.” Then he steered the conversation to what else might be drawing attention—at the exact same time.

“We know it coincides with the Knicks’ final run, we know it coincides with July 4th, America 250, Taylor Swift’s wedding, all happening at the same time, and we are so excited to welcome the world here,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani also emphasized the scale of the moment. “We are the biggest city in the country. We are used to big events and we are incredibly excited for this one.”

The pushback, if it came, was immediate. Mamdani was asked whether he’d received an invitation to the wedding and whether he planned to attend. He answered plainly: “No and no. I wish them a lovely wedding. I’ll listen to ‘Only the Young’ at home on my own.”

His comments echoed something the city’s top police official had already hinted at earlier this month.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. speaking at a City Council budget hearing. addressed potential overtime needs for officers and laid out major events through July that could require additional hours. She cited the city’s Fourth of July festivities. the Sail 250 military parade. and the FIFA World Cup before adding “potentially Taylor Swift’s wedding.” After that. she quickly changed course. saying. “I’m kidding.”.

Since Mamdani’s Monday remarks, questions have spread as fast as the idea itself: is this coordination meant to reassure people about security, or did the city simply talk too much?

Yahoo reached out to Mamdani’s office and the NYPD but had not heard back. A city official from the mayor’s office later said Mamdani’s comments were based entirely on an earlier report that Swift had applied for a permit at Madison Square Garden for the Fourth of July weekend—an application that fueled speculation about the wedding venue.

Swift and Travis Kelce have stayed tight-lipped publicly about any wedding plans. Still, their relationship has been closely tracked by fans who often read every detail for clues.

Swift and Kelce announced their engagement last August in a joint Instagram post after two years of dating. The post—featuring snapshots of Swift and Kelce standing in a garden after he popped the question—has garnered more than 37 million likes. The caption read, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”.

Swift also previously shared her excitement in an interview with Graham Norton last October, saying, “I’m so excited about it. I know it’s going to be fun to plan,” and adding that she plans to put “anyone I’ve ever talked to” on the guest list.

So in New York. the rumor isn’t just about a party—it’s about what the city’s officials have said out loud while planning for an unusually packed week. Between Knicks’ final run timing. July 4th. America 250. and the FIFA World Cup on July 5 in New Jersey. the mayor’s Monday mention turned speculation into something closer to official talk—right up until he said he wasn’t getting an invite. and that he’d be home with “Only the Young.”.
