NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani didn’t just post a teaser—he picked a platform and a format built for live, unfiltered back-and-forth.
On May 21. the 34-year-old mayor launched a Twitch series titled “Talk with the People. ” where he answers questions from New Yorkers live on the stream. He announced the series in an Instagram post this morning, using a photo of himself alongside a Franklin D. Roosevelt “Fireside Chat,” signaling exactly what he’s borrowing from political history.
Mamdani’s approach to campaigning and governing has already leaned hard on social media. His earlier campaign drew attention for how engagingly it used online channels. and since taking office he has kept producing shortform video content. The Twitch series extends that strategy by aiming for something that feels increasingly rare in modern politics: direct access. in real time. with minimal distance between elected officials and the people asking questions.
The most famous blueprint sits in the Roosevelt era. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats” were created during the Great Depression and World War II. with the idea that the president was speaking almost as if he were in Americans’ living rooms—broadcast through radio. and intended to reach the public without being filtered through the press.
Mamdani’s naming also reaches closer to New York. It echoes a 1940s radio show by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who ran a Sunday broadcast called “Talk to the People” from January 1942 until the end of his term in December 1945.
This isn’t just nostalgia dressed up for the internet. Modern politics has started to treat platforms like Twitch—once primarily known for gaming—as spaces where public debate can happen in front of a live audience. A recent example came from IL-D9 Congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh. who deployed Twitch during her campaign and used her social media presence. in part. to mobilize a collective of young voters. many of whom are active on Instagram and Twitch.
Mamdani’s pivot to Twitch lands in a broader pattern visible on his own accounts. His Instagram comment sections were often filled with viewers saying they wished they lived in New York so they could vote for him. a reminder that his reach isn’t limited to those already on the voter rolls. In a statement. the mayor described the move as “bringing City Hall directly to the platforms where New Yorkers already spend their time.”.
The series will broadcast on Twitch, but it won’t stay there. It will also be available on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok—an attempt to meet people where they already watch, scroll, and talk.
