Mahomes returns to OTAs as brace shows progress

Mahomes returns – Patrick Mahomes took part in the Kansas City Chiefs’ first OTA practice of the offseason on May 26, throwing with a bulky brace on his recovering left knee. The video, posted by the team, comes as coach Andy Reid previously said Mahomes was in a “good position
The first Tuesday of Chiefs OTAs brought something fans have been waiting for since the injury that sidelined Patrick Mahomes: movement that looks like football.
On May 26. Kansas City held its first offseason OTA practice. and Mahomes was able to take the field for at least part of the session. The Chiefs posted video of him throwing. the quarterback recovering from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee suffered in the Chiefs’ Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. In the clip. Mahomes is wearing a bulky brace on his injured knee and still looks comfortable dropping back to pass.
For a franchise built on timing, this kind of update carries extra weight. It wasn’t a full picture handed to the public—reporters weren’t allowed into the session. and the Chiefs didn’t add any further status notes beyond the posted video. Still. the decision to share Mahomes on the practice field was itself a signal that his recovery is continuing to move forward.
That momentum has been showing up in smaller glimpses all offseason. Mahomes has posted brief updates of his progress. including a four-second video in late March of him throwing during an indoor workout on his Instagram story. More recently. he shared a clip of him successfully executing a golf swing at an annual event for his non-profit. “15 and the Mahomies Foundation.”.
Those social posts tracked closely with the tone set by Chiefs coach Andy Reid at a May 2 availability, when he told reporters, “He is in a good position to be able to do some things.”
The question now is how far “some things” goes—how much of the practice work translates into full-speed football.
Tuesday’s session didn’t answer that completely. Because it was closed to reporters and the team didn’t provide additional updates, the extent of Mahomes’ participation remains unclear. The next chance for more detail comes after the Chiefs’ May 29 OTA practice, the first session open to the media.
In the meantime. Kansas City fans have another date circled on their calendars: Mahomes’ potential return for the Chiefs’ Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football.” Mahomes is 30 years old. and the brace-and-throw sequence on May 26 is the latest evidence feeding growing confidence that he could be on the field when the season begins.
