The Red Sox lineup is out for another night that starts with a familiar question: can they keep their bats moving forward as the right arm takes the mound?
Boston will send lefty Ranger Suárez to open the game, with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. The Braves counter with right-hander Spencer Strider.
The matchup comes after the two teams already met earlier this month in Atlanta, when the Braves won two of three. Tonight, the stakes feel sharper because Boston is trying to ride momentum, and because the day’s numbers point to specific bats that have recently changed the rhythm of games.
Boston’s lineup features Jarren Duran leading off in left field. with Ceddanne Rafaela in center field and Wilyer Abreu in right field. Willson Contreras is at first base. Masataka Yoshida is listed as the designated hitter. and Marcelo Mayer is in the mix at shortstop. Carlos Narváez is in the group of late starters. with Connor Wong at second base and Andruw Monasterio also appearing. Mickey Gasper is at third base, while Sogard, Caleb Durbin, Jose?. No—Caleb Durbin is listed as 2B, and Sogard is listed as 2B in the lineup. Ceddanne Rafaela is CF, Kiner-Falefa is 3B. (The lineup as provided also includes: Duran LF. Rafaela CF. Abreu RF. Contreras 1B. Yoshida DH. Gasper C. Sogard 2B. Mayer SS. Kiner-Falefa 3B.).
Pitching details set the contrast early. Suárez enters with a 2-2 record and a 2.40 ERA.
The Braves come in stacked across the middle of the order. Ronald Acuña Jr. is in right field. Dubón is in left. Matt Olson is at first base. Ozzie Albies at second. Riley at third. and White serving as the designated hitter. Harris II plays center. Kim is at shortstop. and León is listed as the opposing center in the lineup provided.
Spencer Strider is on the mound for Atlanta, holding a 2-0 record with a 3.00 ERA.
Beyond the starting point—who’s pitching and where everyone is placed—the day’s numbers spotlight why this matchup matters.
There’s a stat that hangs over the Red Sox regardless of who wins the first inning: the Red Sox have never made the playoffs in a year when they lost 17 of 25 home games.
On the field, the current form looks complicated but promising for Boston. In the Red Sox’ last seven games, the team is batting .272 with a .340 OBP and .782 OPS.
The lineup has specific reasons to believe something could break open. Willson Contreras is batting .452 with a 1.372 OPS over his eight-game hitting streak. Wilyer Abreu is also producing, hitting .301 with an .804 OPS over his last 29 games.
But the Braves carry their own edge—and their own concerns—into the opener. Atlanta is coming off a pair of losses to the Nationals in which they managed just one run. with that run coming in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat. Matt Olson is batting .160 with two extra-base hits in his last 13 games. a dip that could matter if the early Braves contact doesn’t turn into opportunities.
What makes the pitching matchup feel like the night’s anchor is how often these two teams have met through Suárez’s work. Suárez has made 22 appearances against Atlanta, including 13 starts. His record against them is 4-4, with a 3.38 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 80 innings.
For Strider, the Red Sox have seen him before and, despite the results, they’ve managed to stay in the fight. Strider has allowed three earned runs on nine hits in 11⅔ innings across two starts against the Red Sox, but didn’t receive a decision in either game.
The individual matchups embedded in the preview add one more layer: for the Braves, Ronald Acuña Jr. is 5-22, Ozzie Albies 9-28, Michael Harris II 3-20, Ha-Seong Kim 3-11, and Matt Olson 7-28. For the Red Sox. the lists include Wilyer Abreu 0-2. Willson Contreras 1-4. Jarren Duran 0-4. Marcelo Mayer 0-2. and Carlos Narváez 1-1.
Strider vs. Suárez is the headline—but the way the games have been swinging lately makes the night feel like more than a matchup of pitchers. Boston’s surge in the last week and Contreras’ current streak are built into the lineup tonight. Atlanta’s recent stinginess after two losses to Washington. paired with Olson’s recent stretch. sets up the tension: who breaks first—batters chasing a rhythm. or pitchers trying to hold the line.
Game time is 6:45 p.m., with TV and radio coverage listed as NESN, TBS, and WEEI-FM 93.7. The Braves will look to turn their earlier success in Atlanta earlier this month into a follow-through, while the Red Sox aim to make the numbers behind their recent run count before the day closes.

Strider’s gonna cook whoever’s on the mound lol.
Wait so Suarez is pitching for the Red Sox but the title says it’s Suarez vs Strider… so who’s actually winning? Braves always have better hitters though. Also why are there like 2 second basemen listed? feels like a typo.
I don’t get it, Boston’s “lineup is out for another night” but then it says lineup is set. Like did they already pick the guys or not? And Matt Olson struggling… isn’t he like the whole reason they’re good? If he’s cold then Strider gonna run the score up.
Numbers “point to specific bats”?? I swear these previews always make it sound like the newspaper knows the outcome. Duran leading off is fine but if they can’t keep the bats moving forward then what even is the point. Braves vs Red Sox earlier this month and they won two of three, so this seems like it should be close again right? I’m just hoping for a good game, not another weird lineup mess.
