Maher signals 2028 GOP vote—if stolen-election claims end

Maher’s deal – Bill Maher told Vice President JD Vance that his vote for the 2028 election is “in play” for both parties—then laid out a clear condition: a Republican candidate must stop falsely claiming elections were stolen, a standard he says President Donald Trump set in
Bill Maher walked into his HBO interview with Vice President JD Vance knowing the conversation could land in the most explosive part of modern politics: what happens after an election is lost.
It was a Friday night sit-down on “Real Time” that began with Maher’s frustration that Democratic politicians won’t engage with him—and quickly shifted to a question Maher said could decide his vote in the 2028 presidential election. He received criticism in 2025 for sitting down with President Donald Trump for a private White House dinner. and he’s also repeatedly taken aim at Democrats even as he has supported them at the ballot box. By the time he sat with Vance. the theme running through his remarks was less about party letters and more about what he views as the breaking point for credibility.
Maher. who has supported Democrats for president but is often critical of the party. said he couldn’t get several prominent Democrats to talk to him. He thanked Vance for coming on the show and then complained. “It’s the people I vote for. they’re the ones who won’t talk to me. ” adding. “That’s odd. isn’t it?. I can’t get [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]. I can’t get [Zohran] Mamdani. I couldn’t get Kamala Harris.”.
When the conversation turned to 2028, Maher said his decision is not locked to a party label. “If this is where [the Democrats are] going, my vote is in play,” he told Vance. He added, “Actually, it always has been. Every year, I don’t make my decision by who has an R or a D. I actually always came to the conclusion that the Democrat was probably better and voted for them.”.
Then came the line that landed hardest with the political tension already surrounding Trump’s 2020 claims of election fraud. Maher told Vance his “deal breaker” for the 2028 Republican presidential candidate—potentially including Vance himself—would be whether they can accept losing without falsely arguing the election was stolen. “Under Trump, you guys have two outcomes that an election can be: Either we win, or they cheated. That … has to stop,” Maher said, drawing applause.
Vance did not fully accept the framing. He told Maher, “I don’t think that we should not concede elections, but I don’t think that’s what’s going on.”
The interview also moved into enforcement and immigration. Maher pressed Vance with tough questions about immigration. saying he believes Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been “too rough” during its enforcement operations. Maher said the Trump administration should admit that “you guys went too far” on this. Vance pushed back. saying that “law enforcement deporting people is never an easy process. ” and added. “I appreciate your argument that we’ve gone too far. but we couldn’t do nothing. and I don’t think there was an easy way to do this.”.
Despite the clashes, the two men found common ground in one place: their skepticism of the news media. Vance remarked that he was surprised Maher wasn’t sounding like a “crazy liberal.” Maher responded that Vance’s perspective made sense because “you don’t watch the show. ” then quipped. “I know someone in your administration who watches the show. because I always hear about it.”.
Maher’s remarks also came wrapped in the political fallout from his earlier high-profile interaction with Trump. His interview with Vance arrived weeks after the Kennedy Center tapped him for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. following his tiff with President Trump. Earlier. Maher faced criticism in 2025 after he sat down with Trump for a private dinner at the White House and later told viewers Trump was surprisingly personable. Trump later posted on Truth Social that the dinner was a “total waste of time. ” while Maher alleged it was that way because “I never stopped criticizing him.”.
Even in his broader criticism of Democrats. Maher has continued to vote across party lines when he believes the choice requires it. In a 2025 episode of his podcast. he said the Democratic Party is “very unpopular. and for very good reason. ” while noting he voted for Harris. “I didn’t vote for Trump. As I always say to my woke friends, we voted for the same person. You’re just why she lost.”.
The political stakes of Maher’s Vance conversation land against a larger cultural moment too: Maher is set to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in a ceremony on Sunday. June 28. For many voters. the event’s punchline could be less about comedy and more about the conditions Maher says could redraw where he lands in 2028—and what kind of political reality a candidate will accept when the outcome doesn’t go their way.

Maher talking to Vance like that is so wild. Like bro just pick a side already.
So the condition is basically “stop saying stolen elections” and then he’ll vote GOP? That sounds like he’s just bargaining. Also why does it matter what he thinks in 2028 if people don’t even listen now.
Wait I thought Maher was like, super anti-Trump? But he had dinner with him so maybe this is just political theater. And the AOC thing—if she won’t talk to him does that mean she’s guilty of the stolen election stuff? That’s what my cousin said anyway.
I don’t get it. He keeps saying his vote is “in play” but he still “supports Democrats” right? Like which is it, you know? If a Republican candidate has to stop stolen-election claims… okay but what if they don’t, then he just stays Dem forever? Seems like he’s trying to punish both sides or whatever. Also the fact he says he can’t get AOC or Kamala to talk to him just feels petty, like he wants attention more than policy.
