Linda Perry Initially Rejected Christina for “Beautiful”

Linda Perry says she didn’t think Christina Aguilera was the right fit to sing her “Beautiful” at first—until advice from her manager pushed her to reconsider, and the raw demo changed everything. The song later became a Grammy-winning hit after Christina incl

When Linda Perry first heard Christina Aguilera’s demo for “Beautiful,” her reaction wasn’t polite—it was skeptical. During a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show. the 61-year-old songwriter and record producer explained that she didn’t want to hand the song to the pop star because she didn’t think it matched.

“I didn’t think she was the right fit,” Perry said, describing the moment she heard the pitch. “No, you’re like, a hot chick. I’m not giving you this song. No way. Are you kidding me?”

She said that view softened only after her manager urged her to give Aguilera a chance. Once Perry did, the demo landed differently than she expected.

“It made sense,” Perry shared. “That’s when I discovered, oh, beautiful people are actually insecure and just as damaged as I am.”

Perry’s blunt comparison kept going. “She’s just as f–ked up as I am. Okay. And then it broke the ice between the both of us when I saw that.”

The breakthrough mattered for more than casting—it shaped how the song was recorded. Perry said the original demo she had made Aguilera use was the one she ultimately wanted to keep, because she valued how unpolished and emotional it felt.

While Aguilera pleaded for a chance to re-record it, Perry stood by the first take. “That’s the version that sold me [and] made me believe she had emotions. That she was insecure, that she was lacking in confidence in certain places, that she needed acceptance and approval,” Perry said.

Perry then tied her creative choice directly to the song’s message. “I said, ‘Christina, what is wonderful about this vocal is you didn’t know what you were doing. That’s why it’s going to be huge. because so many people are going to relate to this imperfect vocal. That’s what this song is about. Not being perfect. I think that’s an art that needs to come back.’”.

Christina Aguilera eventually recorded “Beautiful” and included it on her 2002 album Stripped. The track went on to win her the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004.

Perry’s story came as she and Aguilera continued to show up in pop-culture moments, including the recent 35th anniversary celebration of The Abbey in West Hollywood, which multiple celebrities attended.

  1. I don’t buy it, “Beautiful” was already gonna be a hit. Like Christina could sing a microwave beep and it would win a Grammy.

  2. The part about “hot chick”?? That sounds kinda rude to me but then she says it broke the ice. Also calling the demo “unpolished” like that’s why it worked… maybe, but I feel like the producers did the heavy lifting.

  3. Wait so Linda Perry rejected Christina… and then used the first demo anyway. Isn’t that backwards? Like if it was bad why keep it. Also Christina was on Stripped in 2002 right, I remember. Crazy she didn’t re-record sooner though.
