Lily Allen fires back at critic over West End Girl

After a London critic mocked her O2 show’s short length, lack of audience engagement, and ticket price, Lily Allen took to X to defend “West End Girl,” insisting the tour has been advertised clearly and that her set stays focused on the album.

Lily Allen didn’t just read the criticism—she answered it point by point.

In the early hours of Monday. Rupert Hawksley. opinion editor for London’s The Spectator. posted a blunt breakdown of what he said went wrong at her London O2 performance. He wrote that there was “no support act. ” that Allen “arrived on stage at 9:10pm. ” and that the show was “all wrapped up by 10pm.” He also complained that there was “not one word to the audience” and that it cost “£86 to sit in the gods.”.

The post didn’t take long to land with Allen. Hours later, she returned to X with a direct response that addressed each complaint—and made it clear she understood exactly what the critic was calling out.

“There is a support act. The show has always been advertised as ‘Lily Allen performs West End Girl.’ I was a few mins late as my tights were laddered and I had to change them. ” Allen wrote. She added that the performance is “just over an hour as it’s just the album in its entirety. ” describing it as “my artistic choice not to talk to the audience.” In her view. keeping a “fourth wall” is central to the storytelling. and she said “Most people find it to be effective.”.

Allen also pushed back on the idea that fans were being shortchanged. “I don’t want anyone to feel ripped off,” she wrote, while adding that “everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can.” She closed that message with: “I’m extremely proud of it.”

Hawksley later followed up. saying Allen’s “performance was brilliant” while holding to his earlier argument that “it can’t be right to charge that much for an hour. late on Sunday night.” After Allen’s fans came in with their own criticism. he clarified that he wasn’t questioning her choice to perform only songs from “West End Girl.” His remaining sticking points. he said. were the lack of an opening act and the feeling that there wasn’t even “a ‘thank you so much for coming’. ” which he described as “a bit weird.”.

Allen’s reply was quick and teasing: “I’d happily concede that I’m a bit weird, though.”

The clash comes as Allen’s “West End Girl” tour continues to draw attention well beyond the stage. She first announced the tour in October, shortly after the album’s release. Initially. Allen planned to play only theater shows. but demand pushed her to expand the run to include arenas in the United Kingdom. Unites States. Australia and New Zealand.

On Monday. though. the debate wasn’t about her choice of venues—it was about how the show should feel once the lights go down: immersive and album-focused. or built for audience chatter. Allen says her structure is intentional. Hawksley says the price and timing still don’t add up. And on X, at least, they’re not letting the last word slip away.
