LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigns after FBI probe

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned Sunday night as the FBI investigation into the district and his offices continues. His resignation comes nearly four months after the bureau served search warrants at his home and LAU
When the FBI served search warrants at Alberto Carvalho’s home and at Los Angeles Unified’s headquarters in late February, the district moved quickly to suspend him from day-to-day duties. Sunday night, nearly four months later, the superintendent stepped down.
An LAUSD spokesperson confirmed to MISRYOUM that the district received a letter of resignation from Carvalho. In the letter. Carvalho wrote. “It has been a great honor to serve you. ” addressing “the students. families. teachers. staff. and community of LAUSD.” He credited the last four years with “historic progress. ” saying the gains “belong to our students. our educators. staff and our communities.” The letter did not directly explain why he was leaving. and he did not address the reason for the resignation.
The LAUSD Board of Education issued a statement after the resignation was announced. saying the board remains committed to “ensuring stability. continuity. and continued progress through strong leadership.” It added that its focus remains “providing every student with a high-quality education. supporting our dedicated workforce. and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve.”.
Acting Superintendent Andrés Chait will remain in the role until the district can permanently fill the position, officials said.
The resignation lands amid an investigation that has so far included searches but no criminal charges against Carvalho. On Feb. 27. two days after the FBI conducted searches at his home and at LAUSD offices. the Board of Education voted unanimously to place him on leave pending the outcome of the probe.
In a statement released in March. attributed to a spokesperson for Carvalho. Carvalho said he remained confident “that the evidence will ultimately demonstrate that he acted appropriately and in the best interests of students.” The statement said the district’s school board should reinstate him “promptly.” It also said Carvalho “respects the rule of law and the investigative process and has always acted in the best interests of students and within the bounds of the law.” It added that while the investigation was ongoing. “no evidence has been presented by prosecutors supporting any allegation that Mr. Carvalho violated federal law.”.
Authorities have not charged Carvalho with any crimes.
The broader case includes an additional search tied to the education technology company at the center of a separate controversy involving Los Angeles schools. The FBI also searched a third location near Miami. and the Miami Herald reported the Florida property belonged to Debra Kerr. who previously worked with AllHere. an education technology company that had a contract with Los Angeles schools before it collapsed. The leader of AllHere was indicted for fraud.
In 2024, Carvalho publicly touted a deal with AllHere for an AI chatbot named “Ed,” designed to help students. About three months after unveiling the technology and paying the company $3 million. the district dropped its dealings with AllHere. which later collapsed into bankruptcy. Months afterward, founder Joanna Smith-Griffin was charged with securities and wire fraud, along with identity theft.
At the time, Carvalho denied personal involvement in the selection of AllHere, according to the Los Angeles Times.
After the FBI searched the school headquarters, LA Unified said it was cooperating with investigators.
Carvalho became superintendent for Los Angeles Unified in 2022. He previously led the public schools in Miami.

So he resigned but no charges?? sounds like politics to me.
Wait, the FBI searched his home in February and then he just leaves months later… but they won’t say why? That’s super shady. I feel bad for the teachers and kids, like who even runs the district now?
FBI probe can be anything though, doesn’t mean he did something illegal. Also LAUSD always has drama, so maybe the board just needed a scapegoat. Acting superintendent keeps the seats warm and then they hire another guy from the same network, watch.
I don’t get it, he says “historic progress” in the resignation letter like nothing happened. If the FBI is involved shouldn’t they just fire him immediately instead of waiting 4 months? Feels like they’re trying to control the story. And why isn’t it in the letter what it’s about??
