Warner Bros Confirms New ThunderCats Animated Movie

Warner Bros is actively developing a new ThunderCats animated movie, reviving a 1980s fantasy franchise defined by its story of cat aliens, a destroyed home planet, and a crash on Third Earth. The project is still in early development, with few details availab
By the time ThunderCats became a familiar part of 1980s TV culture, its premise was already built for escape: cat-like aliens watching their world burn, then fighting to survive after everything goes wrong.
Now that same nostalgia is being pulled back into focus. Warner Bros has confirmed that it is in active development on a new ThunderCats animated movie. The announcement came during the Annecy Film Festival earlier this week. and at the time of writing. very little is publicly known about the project—no confirmed creative team. casting. or other specifics.
The original ThunderCats series ran for a few seasons between 1985 and 1989. Its story follows a group of human-like cat aliens from the planet Thundera, whose planet is destroyed at the start of the series. The surviving characters flee in a spaceship, only for that ship to crash on Third Earth.
Over the years, ThunderCats has reappeared on screen across different eras, including in 2011 and again in 2020. Each return has come with the promise of “a new spin,” and the latest effort is being positioned the same way—devoted to the classic tale, while aiming to bring it forward.
Warner Bros’ renewed interest in fantasy and genre storytelling isn’t happening in isolation. HBO brought fans back to Westeros with the long-awaited premiere of House of the Dragon Season 3. and new episodes are set to be released over the next six weeks until the season finale. Prime Video has also doubled down on fantasy with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. returning for Season 3 this year. Prime Video previously had The Wheel of Time as another flagship fantasy series. but the streamer canceled it last year—and that decision has sparked extreme pushback from fans.
More information about the Warner Bros ThunderCats movie—such as creatives and casting details—is expected once the animated film reaches a more advanced stage of development.

ThunderCats?? I thought that was already a thing again. Like what spin are they doing now lol
So they’re rebooting ThunderCats but won’t say anything yet? Typical. Warner Bros just wants the name, then does whatever with the story. Also Annecy already has enough animation coming out.
Wait, is this connected to the 2020 version or whatever? I’m confused because they mentioned Third Earth but then act like it’s new. If the planet Thundera is gone again that’s just lazy writing, like c’mon. Also HBO and Rings of Power stuff is mentioned, so maybe they’re trying to copy that fantasy vibe?
I swear these companies only do “animated movies” when live action is too risky. I loved the original ThunderCats, like the whole crash on Third Earth part, but I don’t trust them to keep the same vibe. They say “early development” with no team/cast yet, so I’m not even sure it’s real. Feels like another announcement to cash in on nostalgia while House of the Dragon is trending.
