By the time the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup game sounded in Los Angeles, LA28 was already looking ahead to who might be needed next—this time in the form of volunteers ready to show up during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The organization is opening the application period for “games-time volunteering” for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Tuesday, July 14. The roles are unpaid and travel or lodging expenses aren’t covered. but LA28 said the work could range from assisting guests and athletes to more specialized functions such as medical and translation services.
LA28 IOC President Kirsty Coventry said the Olympics can avoid the kind of World Cup visa issues athletes have faced. including entry delays and denials. Her comments come as volunteer applications open only days after the final 2026 World Cup game. with the new window running alongside an Olympic ticket opportunity for fans.
Volunteer roles span several categories
Volunteer applications are tied to “games-time volunteering,” and LA28 said applicants can indicate preferred volunteer role categories—though top choices aren’t guaranteed.

Volunteer eligibility rules are specific
To apply, LA28 said people must meet several criteria:
Be 18 years old or older at the time of applying. Be proficient in English, reading and writing. Be available for a minimum of 10 nonconsecutive shifts during the 2028 Olympic Games period (March–August 2028) or the Paralympic Games period (August–September 2028). LA28 said shifts are approximately eight hours. Be present at one of these locations during the above periods: Greater Los Angeles. Oklahoma City. New York City. Columbus. Nashville. St. Louis, San Jose and San Diego.
LA28 also said volunteers don’t need to be a U.S. citizen or a California resident.
How LA28 will assess and notify selected volunteers
Applicants can find volunteer application updates by visiting la28.org, where people will be invited to an in-person assessment in Los Angeles if selected from the initial application pool. LA28 said a virtual experience will be available if a person is selected but isn’t in Los Angeles.
If selected, LA28 said applicants will be notified via email.
Ticket draws run on a parallel track
For fans focused on getting seats, LA28 is directing people to la28.org to register for the next ticket draw for the Olympic Games. The registration window closes July 22.
LA28 said those who previously registered for the first ticket draw but weren’t selected for a time slot will be automatically entered into the upcoming draw. Applicants will be notified Aug. 6–7 if they’ve been given a time slot to purchase tickets.
Tickets for the Paralympic Games will be available for purchase in 2027.

The Olympic Games are July 14–30, 2028. The Paralympic Games are Aug. 15–27, 2028.
