William Karlsson didn’t finish Game 5.

The Vegas Golden Knights forward left Thursday. June 11’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes early in the second period after absorbing a check from Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker along the boards. On the bench, a trainer looked at Karlsson’s arm, then Karlsson skated to the dressing room. He didn’t return.

ABC reported that Karlsson left Lenovo Center to undergo further examination.

Back on the bench, Golden Knights coach John Tortorella looked discouraged when the trainer came out to speak with him. After the 4-2 loss, Tortorella delivered a postgame report that offered no firm update, but the message landed without ambiguity.

“He’s not going to be with us probably,” Tortorella said. “We’ve got to find a way to fill that void, not with just one guy but as a team.”

Tortorella said he had no update on Karlsson, but the tone didn’t sound optimistic. Karlsson’s absence comes as the stakes keep tightening for Vegas.

The Hurricanes lead the series 3-2 after the 4-2 victory. Carolina can clinch its first Stanley Cup title since 2006 on Sunday, June 14 in Game 6 at Las Vegas.

In the Final, Karlsson had two goals and two assists. His season was disrupted earlier—he was limited to 14 games in the regular season—but his late return in the regular season was among the factors that helped the Golden Knights clinch a playoff berth.

For Tortorella, Karlsson’s role wasn’t just about points. “He’s an important piece for us,” he said. “Penalty killer. Power play guy. He’s a winner.”

The sequence matters: a single hit in the second period. an immediate trip to the dressing room. and then a series outlook that shifted quickly from “no update” to a likely absence. With Game 6 looming in Las Vegas and Carolina already one win from a long-awaited title. Vegas now has to decide how much of its game plan was built around Karlsson—and how fast it can replace him with a full-team response.

  1. “Probably out” is such a weird way to say it. Like is he dead or just…not coming back? Vegas is screwed if they can’t replace him.

  2. Didn’t Karlsson like barely even play all season though? I mean 14 games or whatever. So it’s not exactly shocking he’s hurt now. Also Tortorella always looks discouraged, even when they win.

  3. This series is cursed. One hit and he’s gone to get examined, then it’s basically “yeah he’s out.” Hurricanes really about to clinch at Vegas? Feels like Vegas momentum got ripped in the second period. I hope it’s not serious serious, but coach sounding like that means it’s bad. Also why does it say “void” like some fantasy thing lol.
