Kangaroo captured, llama seized in San Antonio suburb

Elmendorf kangaroo – Elmendorf police say a kangaroo named Little Rex was taken into custody after being spotted loose, and an officer later shut down a road to apprehend a llama named Captain. The department warned residents not to box the animal and assured the back-to-back inci

For two days straight, Elmendorf — a small community just outside San Antonio — had to deal with an escapee hopping through town and, hours later, a different animal on a rural road.

It began on May 20. when the Elmendorf Police Department posted on its official Facebook page that officers were dealing with “kangaroo on the loose…off the city bingo card. ” after residents reported the hopping marsupial. Police said they were coordinating with the game warden and Texas Parks and Wildlife to locate the animal. In the same post, the department warned citizens against boxing the kangaroo.

“We appreciate the community’s cooperation while officers attempt to bring this unexpected guest home safely,” the department wrote.

Later that day, an update appeared on the post saying the kangaroo, identified as Little Rex, had been located and “taken into custody.” The department added, “No further hopping through city limits is expected at this time.”

But Elmendorf’s run of unusual calls didn’t end there.

On May 21, around 2:40 p.m. local time. an Elmendorf police officer spotted a llama while patrolling a country road. according to a new Facebook announcement from the department. The officer shut down the road for about an hour while the officer and city field staff safely apprehended the animal. Police said the llama, named Captain, was returned to its owner.

As residents watched the updates roll in, the department tried to lower the temperature. The back-to-back encounters were described as a coincidence. In another Facebook post. Elmendorf Police Department wrote: “Yes. we know this comes right after yesterday’s kangaroo capture.” The message added. “We promise we are not begging for attention — apparently the animals just saw the post and wanted their turn.”.

The sequence left residents with a clear takeaway: even in a routine suburban setting, a single post about an animal on the loose can rapidly lead to a second emergency response — and this time, officers said they were done after Captain was returned and Little Rex was secured.

  1. How is a kangaroo even in Texas like… did it get loose from a zoo or someone’s backyard?

  2. They shut down a road for a llama?? I feel like this is why we can’t have nice quiet suburbs anymore. Also “don’t box the animal” like people actually would?

  3. Wait I thought they said the animals were “turning” because of the Facebook post??? Like the post goes out and the animals just decide to escape out of spite or something lol. Doesn’t make sense but also kinda does??

  4. I don’t buy the coincidence part. If they can coordinate with game wardens and Parks & Wildlife that fast, why was it even roaming around in the first place? Sounds like somebody’s pet and they’re trying to play it off as “unexpected guest” marketing. Also Elmendorf is basically San Antonio suburbs so of course it’s all on Facebook now.
