jury convicts – A Suffolk County jury convicted Alvin Campbell, the brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, of 21 sex assault counts involving conduct between 2017 and 2019. Jurors deadlocked on one rape charge, and Alvin Campbell faces up to life in prison

For women who said they were picked out in the moments they were trying to get home—outside bars or other locations—the next steps were supposed to be simple. Instead, a man they believed was there to drive them became something else.

On Thursday. a jury convicted Alvin Campbell. 45. the brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell. of sexually assaulting women while he posed as a rideshare driver. Jurors found him guilty of 21 out of 22 counts covering sex assaults from 2017 to 2019. The jury was deadlocked on one rape charge.

The Suffolk County district attorney’s office said it “will determine our action, if any, at a future date on that charge.”

Campbell faces up to life in prison for aggravated rape when he is sentenced on June 29.

Prosecutors said Campbell targeted women by presenting himself as a rideshare driver, including by going after victims outside bars or other locations. For the women who testified, that deception turned ordinary nightlife into a trap.

The case lands under a spotlight that reaches beyond the courtroom. Andrea Campbell became the first woman of color to win statewide office in Massachusetts when she was sworn in as attorney general in 2023. Her office did not immediately return an email from The Associated Press late Thursday seeking comment on the verdict.

After the verdict, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden told reporters he hadn’t spoken with the attorney general.

Hayden said Alvin Campbell “deceivingly and calculatedly” preyed upon women in their most vulnerable moments. “I can’t imagine what that horror must have been like for them,” Hayden said. He also expressed gratitude to the women who testified. saying the prosecution is “happy that we were able to secure justice and accountability for them.”.

Andrea Campbell has previously spoken about her family’s troubled history in the criminal justice system. including her brother’s rape charges. In an earlier interview. she said. “One thing I do frequently is share my story because I think there are so many who carry their story with a sense of shame and don’t want to talk about it. including the criminal aspects of my family.” She added. “But there is no shame in one sharing their story. There is power in it.”.

The attorney general is the chief lawyer and law enforcement officer in the state.

Campbell’s defense attorney did not immediately respond to a phone message and email from the AP.

The jury’s split on the single rape charge means one part of the case remains unfinished. even as the conviction count stands at 21. For now. the verdict has reshaped the legal reality for Alvin Campbell—and raised the stakes for what comes next as sentencing approaches and the district attorney weighs how to proceed on the undecided count.
