Ty’s Sweet Magnolias exit explained, Season 6 teased

Why Carson – Carson Rowland didn’t return for Sweet Magnolias season 5 because of a mix of creative choices and the actor pursuing other opportunities, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson says. Ty’s absence was folded into Annie’s story—and the season finale ends with a “Miss yo

Sweet Magnolias season 5 arrived with all the familiar drama—and one major missing piece for fans: Tyler “Ty” Townsend wasn’t there. For viewers who watched all 10 episodes. it didn’t take long to notice the gap. especially because Ty had been a constant thread through the show’s first three seasons.

Ty left for a tour with his bandmate at the end of season 4. The show didn’t really prepare audiences for how long the character would stay away. and his absence landed even harder because of where things were heading with Annie (Anneliese Judge). After Ty and Annie finally got together in season 4. their relationship was left hanging in the aftermath of a major fight.

What fans didn’t know yet was that Carson Rowland wasn’t returning—and the reason is tied to both the show’s decisions and the actor’s schedule.

Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson said Carson’s departure came down to a combination of creative decisions and Carson wanting to pursue other opportunities. Deadline later confirmed through multiple sources that he was balancing production on Sweet Magnolias season 4 with other projects. Those included co-executive producing The Testament of Ann Lee and starring in the indie film The Queen’s Jewel.

“It was his choice,” Anderson told the outlet. She also said she couldn’t recall whether Carson informed producers of his decision by the time she wrote the season 4 finale. Anderson previously suggested Ty and Annie still had a future together. but once Carson left. she incorporated Ty’s absence into the season 5 storyline—leaving Annie to navigate life without him.

That choice shows up clearly on screen. In season 5, Annie is forced to keep moving even as the relationship they built earlier in the series remains unresolved.

The season 5 finale does, however, plant something that feels hard to ignore. During Annie’s graduation. she receives flowers from Ty. thanks him by text. and then tosses the bouquet aside as if she’s ready to move on. The episode also leans into emotional uncertainty around a potential love triangle involving Blake (Austin Woods) and Noah (Aidan Merwarth).

Then, in the final moments, Ty resurfaces—just enough to unsettle the direction Annie seems to be taking. Ty sends Annie a text reading, “Miss you,” and later attempts to FaceTime her, but he misses the call.

Anderson wouldn’t confirm or deny whether the finale’s button means Carson could return. “We’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?,” she said.

With Netflix yet to share whether Sweet Magnolias will be renewed for a sixth season, Ty’s next move remains the open question fans will be chasing—especially after season 5 ended in a way that keeps his story emotionally alive, even without his presence in the season until the very end.

  1. Carson not coming back because he’s doing other projects makes sense but also I’m like… why wouldn’t they plan it better? Season 5 felt weird without him.

  2. I swear I saw somewhere it was bc the showrunner didn’t like the chemistry with Annie and Ty?? But then this says it was his choice and creative decisions. Idk, either way Annie’s storyline was left hanging.

  3. So Ty went on tour and now he’s out for the whole season basically? I mean I get actors get busy, but “folded into Annie’s story” sounds like PR talk. Also they teased season 6 like we don’t already know he’ll come back eventually lol. The Queen’s Jewel?? never heard of it but okay
