José Ramírez fractures hamate bone, sidelined into late season

Cleveland’s seven-time All-Star third baseman José Ramírez fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on Saturday, June 13, an injury the Guardians say could keep him out well into the second half of the season—at least six weeks, potentially longer if surgery

For the Cleveland Guardians, Saturday started with a win that moved them into first place. It ended with a hand injury that could cost them José Ramírez for a stretch running into the season’s second half.

Ramírez fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on Saturday, June 13. He was removed from Cleveland’s 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. and the club announced the fracture after the game. The Guardians said his absence will likely be longer if surgery is required to remove the bone. Even without that worst-case scenario, the likely minimum time out is six weeks.

The timing hits hard. Cleveland entered Saturday at 39-33. and the day’s result pushed the Guardians into first place—by a half-game over the Chicago White Sox. Ramírez is not only central to their lineup; he also leads the American League with 24 stolen bases. His .754 OPS trails only Brayan Rocchio’s .762 mark among Guardians players.

Saturday’s injury toll didn’t stop with Ramírez. He was the third Guardian to leave the game due to injury. Outfielder Chase De Lauter suffered a right ribcage contusion after hitting the wall while making a first-inning catch. Angel Martinez left the game with a left foot contusion shortly after fouling the first pitch of the game off his foot.

The sequence matters: a team fighting for the top spot got the result it needed. then watched three different players go down. With Ramírez’s six-week floor—and the possibility of a longer recovery if surgery is involved—the Guardians now face a stretch where their speed. production. and depth will be tested all at once.

  1. Six weeks sounds like a blessing compared to other injuries, but surgery would be brutal. Sucks for Cleveland right when they finally got first place.

  2. Wait if he’s got a fracture in his left hand, does that even affect stealing bases? Like can he still run or is this one of those ‘can’t grip the bat’ deals? also why are they acting like surgery is guaranteed? seems kinda dramatic.

  3. I swear every time the Guardians get momentum somebody gets hurt lol. First place, then Ramírez goes down, then another guy with a rib thing and then foot contusion. By the way, does the hamate thing have to do with the wrist? I’m confused but I feel like they’re cursed this month.
